The Fort Worth Cats and right-handed pitcher Lee Gwaltney have agreed to a contract for the 2009 season, it was announced today.

It will be Gwaltney's third season in a Cats' uniform after going 9-2 with a 2.57 ERA in 2008. His ERA ranked fourth in the American Association. He began the season at Double-A San Antonio in the Padres' system, before re-joining the Cats on May 28 and winning his first seven decisions in a Fort Worth uniform.

Gwaltney, 28, was 6-2 with a 3.16 ERA during his 2007 campaign with the league-champion Cats. Gwaltney's 3.16 ERA ranked 3rd among American Association pitchers. He worked 105 1/3 innings in 23 games, struck out 59 and walked 30. He led the team in complete games with four.

The previous season, Gwaltney appeared in just three games with the Chicago Cubs' Arizona League team in 2006, going 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in seven innings pitched.

In 2005, he appeared in one game at Double-A West Tennessee in the Cubs' organization after going 6-4 between Peoria and Dayton earlier in the season. He was 2-2 for Double-A Reading in 2004 in the Phillies system in four games. He also posted a 3.80 ERA for Clearwater in the Florida State League in 20 starts that year.

After being drafted in the sixth round by Philadelphia in 2002, he spent 2002 with Batavia in the NY-Penn League and split 2003 with Lakewood and the Phillies' Gulf Coast League team.

In his minor league career, Gwaltney is 34-23 with a 3.30 ERA in 130 games.
