The New York Mets today announced that they have signed INF Ramon Martinez to a minor league free agent contract and invited him to major league Spring Training.The 36-year-old Martinez is a veteran of 11 major league seasons. He started last year in the Dodgers organization before signing with the Mets in August. Martinez hit .291 in 25 games with Triple- A New Orleans, before making seven appearances and finishing 4-for-16 with one double for New York following a September 1 call up.
Martinez was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals in 1993 and has been a member of six major league teams, including the 2002 National League Champion San Francisco Giants. A lifetime .264 hitter, Martinez has 29 home runs, 96 doubles, 238RBI and has played all four infield positions in his career.
