Local Kids Benefit From Crosby Program

Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - They dressed like Sidney Crosby, and just maybe they'll play like him one day, too. Over thirty youth first-time hockey players from the Wheeling area showed off their brand new Sidney Crosby signature Reebok SC-87 equipment Wednesday night and received their first ice skating lesson from Wheeling Nailers players at Memorial Skating Rink inside Wheeling Park.

The first-time players all qualified for the recently launched Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program, which is sponsored by Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Reebok and Dick's Sporting Goods. The program was designed to increase youth hockey participation among children ages 4-8 by providing complimentary brand new hockey equipment and teaching them how to play the game.

The program kicked off on Feb. 1 and hundreds of young players have already received head-to-toe hockey equipment - including a helmet, pants, skates, a stick and a bag. The kids also were provided with a Little Penguins jersey, complete with Crosby's name on the back, and helmet stickers.

Local kids that received equipment thanks to the program took to the ice for the first time Wednesday night at Memorial Skating Rink and received their first lesson in ice skating from four Wheeling Nailers.
