Giants Roll Over Bruins 5-0

January 25, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Vancouver Giants

CHILLIWACK BC - The Vancouver Giants finished off a great week and a perfect weekend, manhandling the Chilliwack Bruins en route to a 5-0 victory in the Fraser Valley on Sunday night.

Pressure and shots were the name of the game once again for the Giants, as they peppered Bruins goalie Lucas Gore with 56 shots on goal, including 22 shots in each of the first two periods. Andrej Kudrna would open the scoring for Vancouver, taking a nice feed from Adam Basford before putting a great move on defender Jesse Craige of the Bruins. Kudrna would fake outside, jump inside and drill a wrist shot over the glove of Gore to open the scoring, 1-0 at 4:10. Vancouver would double their lead at the 12:12 mark of the first with another pretty goal. Casey Pierro-Zabotel would convert a rebound from an Evander Kane shot, taking the rebound from his skate to his stick, before going top shelf on a helpless Gore. Casey's 27th of the season would make the score 2-0 after one.

The Giants would keep the pressure up in the second period and finally get rewarded late in the frame. Nick Ross would take a slick feed from Kudrna and slide a shot past Gore at 16:50 of period two. For Kudrna, two points on the evening, for Ross, his second goal in as many games and the Giants had a 3-0 lead coming home.

In the third period, Pierro-Zabotel would tie Brule's record in style with two jaw dropping assists. First, Pierro-Zabotel would take a pass from Evander Kane, ankle high and 'hacky sack' the puck off his right heel to Garry Nunn. Nunn would do the rest, with a pretty move down low and the Giants would extend their lead to 4-0. Pierro-Zabotel would tie the record on his next shift. Once again, taking a pass from Evander Kane wide on the left wing side, Nunn would convert a beautiful feed from Casey and tip the puck past Gore to make the final score 5-0.

Pierro-Zabotel ties the record of 87 points scored in a season, set by Gilbert Brule in the 04-05 season. His 27 goals and 60 assists have Casey first in WHL scoring by eleven points over his next closest pursuer.

The Giants finish the week 4-0 and the weekend with back to back shutouts. The Giants are now 41-4-0-3 on the season. The Giants will play five of their next six games away from the Rink on Renfrew with the one home game coming up this Wednesday versus the Medicine Hat Tigers. You can catch all the action on AM 650, with the SAVE ON FOODS pre-game show at 6:30, puck drop at 7 pm from the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver.
