Condors Head into Break with a Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors took three of a possible four points from a two-game trip to Phoenix to head into the All-Star Break.

The Condors sit in 4th place in the Pacific Division, at 13-21-5 with 31 points in the standings. They trail the Las Vegas Wranglers for third place by four points.

Tuesday, Jan. 20 - All-Star Skills Competition (4:05 p.m.)

WEEK IN REVIEW (Home team in CAPS): Wednesday, Jan. 14 Las Vegas 4 vs. CONDORS 0 Attn: 4,325 G John DeCaro stopped 37 shots for his first shutout of the season and C Hugo Carpentier scored twice to lead the visiting Wranglers to the win. Condors C Dave Bonk had 10 shots on goal to lead Bakersfield, who was shutout for the fifth time of the season.

Friday, Jan. 16 Phoenix 4 vs. CONDORS 3 Attn: 4,999 The Condors overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie it up in the second period, only to have Phoenix push back in front for good. F Matt Pope scored in the final minute to pull Bakersfield close, but they couldn't get the equalizer. G David McKee (right) stopped 28 shots in the loss, and the Condors also received goals from D Jay Langager and D Ryan Mahrle (right).

Saturday, Jan. 17 PHOENIX 5 vs. Condors 4 (OT) The Condors trailed 4-1 after 20 minutes of play, but stormed back to force overtime and take a point in a 5-4 setback in the extra session. F Matt Pope's power play goal with less than five minutes remaining tied the game, and G Yutaka Fukufuji surrendered only the game winner in a relief appearance. F Andrew Ianiero, D Martin Frechette and RW Chad Painchaud also scored for Bakersfield, while C Dave Bonk had three helpers.

Sunday, Jan. 18 Condors 4 vs. PHOENIX 3 G Yutaka Fukufuji made 29 saves and C Bruce Graham scored a pair of goals in a 4-3 win for the visiting Condors. D Martin Frechette had two assists, while LW Mark Derlago and C Brett Pilkington also lit the lamp. The Condors improved to 2-1-2 in Phoenix on the season, and moved within four points of Las Vegas heading into the break with the victory. PLAYER AND TEAM NOTES:

The Condors are 2nd in the league in average attendance at 5,918 fans per game. F Matt Pope scored twice over the weekend to reach 22 goals at the All-Star Break. He is 3rd among all ECHL rookies in goals and 5th (11th overall) with 39 points. Pope's 22nd goal of the season on Saturday tied him with Lars-Peder Nagel (2004-05) for the third-highest rookie goal total in Condors history. RW Chad Painchaud is 6th in the ECHL with 29 assists and tied for 13th with 38 points. The Condors snapped a six-game (0-5-1) winless skid on the road on Sunday. C Dave Bonk tied his own team-high with 10 shots last Wednesday night. D Martin Frechette had 1g-2a in two games in Phoenix, and leads Bakersfield defensemen with 15 points (7g-8a). D Donny Grover had his first point (assist) for the Condors on Saturday, and C Bruce Graham (right) had his first two goals with the Condors on Sunday. Both players have been acquired through trade by Bakersfield within the last month. D Donny Grover was added to the roster on Saturday and subsequently placed on the 3-IR. He will be eligible to be activated on Tuesday. D Chris Kaufman (7-IR) and LW Bobby Bolt (30-IR) remain on the IR, though both are eligible to be activated. D Sean Hurley remains on the 30-IR and is eligible to return on Jan. 27.

ALL-STAR GAME IS THIS WEEK The Condors are off until next weekend for the All-Star Break in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Tuesday night is the Skills Competition, starting at 4:05 p.m. (Pacific). Wednesday night is the All-Star Game, featuring Condors LW Mark Derlago and F Matt Pope, who will be in the starting lineup. Game time is 4:05 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN Bakersfield 1230 AM. Join Condors broadcasters Kevin Bartl and Andrew Buchbinder with a special pre-game show starting at 3 p.m. Both the Skills Competition and All-Star Game will be carried live, free of charge, on B2 Networks as well.

BOBBLEHEADS AND DUCK-STYLE JERSEYS THIS WEEKEND The Condors return to The Nest against the Alaska Aces on Friday, Jan. 23 for Mark Derlago Bobblehead Night, sponsored by KGET-TV 17 and Barber Honda. Game time is 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Condors host the Ontario Reign for Anaheim Ducks-style Jersey Raffle & Auction. The Condors and Reign will both wear jerseys paying tribute to their NHL Affiliates (for the Reign, it's the LA Kings), and the Condors will auction them off after the game to raise proceeds for the Boys & Girls Club of Kern County. Also, everyone in attendance will have the chance to win five of the game-worn jerseys, raffled off at the game. The night is sponsored by Bright House Networks, 98.5 The Fox and American Business Machines, and has a special 7:30 p.m. start time.

GET TICKETS Individual game tickets are on sale and may be purchased through the Rabobank Arena Box Office, which is open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday with extended hours on game days.
