Syvret, Giroux Named To Canadian All-Star Roster
January 6, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The American Hockey League announced today that Phantoms defenseman Danny Syvret and winger Claude Giroux have been selected to the Canadian AHL All-Star Team for the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications, which will be played later this month at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.
Syvret, 23, will be making his first All-Star appearance. The fourth-year blueliner signed with the Flyers organization as a free agent last summer and is enjoying a breakout season with the Phantoms, having posted five goals and 27 assists for 32 points through 36 games headed into tonight's contest at Hamilton. Syvret had previously posted 20 points in each of his three professional seasons playing in the Edmonton Oilers organization. He eclipsed that mark on November 26, needing just 21 games to do so. Throughout the season, Syvret has been jockeying back and forth with Providence's Johnny Boychuk for the AHL's scoring lead among defensemen, and currently sits one point back of Boychuk heading into tonight's action. He is on pace to eclipse the Phantoms franchise record for points by a defenseman. Jamie Heward's 65-point season in 1997-98 is the current high water mark.
Giroux, who turns 21 next week, was selected as a starter by fan voting at TheAHL.com. He makes the All-Star Classic in his first season as a professional. Giroux currently leads all AHL rookies with 17 goals (tied) and 33 points in 31 games for the Phantoms this season. He had an outstanding December, posting 14 points and a plus-12 rating in eight games before being recalled by the Flyers the day after Christmas for their West Coast swing. He's posted two assists in four games with the Flyers. Giroux would only appear in the game if he were to be returned to the Phantoms before the
game is played.
The PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team roster will be announced on Wednesday.
The 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League competing in the 2009 AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, January 25 (4:00 p.m. ET), and the 2009 AHL All-Star Game on Monday, January 26 (7:00 p.m. ET). The event will be televised nationally in the United States and Canada.
The Phantoms continue their season-long five-game road trip tonight when they visit the Hamilton Bulldogs. They'll return home to Philadelphia on January 14 for a 7:05 match-up with the Worcester Sharks. Tickets for that game, as well as all 2008-09 regular season games, are available by calling 1-800-298-4200 or visiting phantomshockey.com.
Through a new partnership with Babies 'R Us, all kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $5 for the rest of the season. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of this great value to experience all the Wachovia Spectrum has to offer as the Phantoms play the final season of hockey in the historic building.
