Maloney returns to Redbirds for '09

Memphis, Tenn. - Manager Chris Maloney will return to Memphis to manage the Redbirds for the third straight season in 2009.

Maloney led the ‘Birds to their first winning season since 2004 posting a record of 75-67 in 2008. The former Mississippi State Bulldog is now 131-155 in two seasons with the Redbirds. Joining Maloney will be pitching coach Blaise Ilsley and hitting coach Mark Budaska, who both return to Memphis for their second season. Ilsley's pitchers posted a Pacific Coast League-best 4.34 ERA led by ERA champ Mitchell Boggs' 3.45 ERA. The ‘Birds hurlers also struck out a franchise-record 1,096 batters in 2008. Budaska coached the hitters to their best batting average since 2004 with the team hitting .272 last season. Athletic Trainer Chris Conroy will also be back in the Redbirds dugout for his fifth year in Memphis.

The Redbirds begin their 10th season in AutoZone Park in April with a pair of exhibition games against the St. Louis Cardinals. The two teams will square off on Friday, April 3 at 7:05 p.m. and again on Saturday, April 4 at 1:05 p.m. Memphis begins their Pacific Coast League schedule at home on Thursday, April 9 against Oklahoma City.
