South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Estero, FL - Bobby Goepfert posted his second shutout of the season as the undermanned South Carolina Stingrays got a 3-0 victory over the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena.
"I am so proud of these guys tonight," said Stingrays Head Coach Jared Bendar. "We played as good a game as we could possibly play tonight."
The South Carolina Stingrays had to deal with a number of call ups and injuries which left them down two men going into the game. Regardless of the being short players, the Stingrays took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Keith Johnson's fifth goal of the season on their first power play opportunity. Johnson put in a rebound to get the goal which was assisted by Paul Kelly and Travis Morin.
The second period was another tightly matched twenty minutes. At 14:51, Nate Kiser unloaded a bomb from the blue line which sailed over the net and banged off the back boards. The puck hit the boards so hard that it bounced back over the net and hit Florida's goaltender, Anton Khudobin in the back ricocheting into the net. The goal was Kiser's first of the year, assisted by Zach Tarkir and Morin, making it a 2-0 lead.
The third period was more of the same and the Stingrays got another goal to increase their lead to 3-0. While on the power play, Pierre-Luc O'Brien got his sixth goal of the season from Johan Kroll and Matt Scherer.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped all 31 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Khudobin who stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-4 on the power play while killing off all six shorthanded situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action tomorrow night when they finish up their two game series with the Florida Everblades. Game time will be at 7:30 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 7:15.
