Portland Loses 4-2 in Worcester

December 7, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL) Portland Pirates

Worcester, MA - The Sharks beat the Pirates 4-2 as Colton Fretter scored his fourth goal in two nights, but it wasn't enough for Portland to grab the win.

The Pirates fell behind in the first period for the second straight night, as the Sharks scored just 3:59 in. Derek Joslin notched his fifth goal of the year from former University of Maine Black Bear Cory Larose and Ryan Vesce. Worcester extended its lead with about nine minutes left in the opening session as Jason Demers took a slap shot from the right point and beat Adam Dennis for his first goal of the season. Joslin and Matt Fornataro got the assists on the play as Worcester took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Portland would come roaring back in the second period with the help of a couple of power plays. Marek Zagrapan deflected a Mark Mancari point shot past Worcester goaltender Thomas Greiss. It was Zagrapan's second goal in as many games and extended Mancari's point streak to 10 games. Tim Kennedy also got a helper on the play. Less than two minutes later, Colton Fretter scored his eighth goal of the year by jamming the rebound of a Matt Ellis shot home. Marc-Andre Gragnani got an assist along with Ellis as Fretter got his fourth goal in two nights. Unfortunately, the Sharks would fight back later in the period as 43-year old Claude Lemieux scored his second goal of the season on a pass from Stephen Zalewski. Lemieux found himself alone in front of Adam Dennis, deked to his backhand and beat the netminder blocker side. Zalewski and Lukas Kaspar earned assists on the play and Worcester took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

The Pirates tried to mount a third period comeback, throwing 10 shots at Thomas Greiss, but the keeper was able to turn them all aside. Ryan Vesce added the empty net goal with just a few seconds left to make the final score 4-2.

JhAdam Dennis stopped 26 of 29 shots he faced and took the loss to drop to 6-5-0 on the year. Thomas Greiss turned aside 21 of 23 shots to pick up the win. Greiss improves to 7-7-0.
