Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, NC. - The Checkers watched an early two goal lead in the first period fall away as they surrendered three unanswered goals and lost by a score of 3-2 to the South Carolina Stingrays.
The Checkers got off to a great start on the power play during the first period after Jared Nightingale fired a shot through traffic that fooled Stingrays netminder Bobby Goepfert at 6:30 putting up the Checkers by 1-0 score. Charlotte would take a two goal lead when Kenny Smith blasted a point shot that found its way under the crossbar and in at 11:01 just as a Checkers power play was expiring. The Stingrays would slash the lead in half after forward Michael Dubic made a nice move around a Checkers defenseman and slid the puck between the legs of Charlotte goalie Maxime Daigneault at 15:42.
South Carolina tied the game during the second period after a turnover on the Checkers blueline resulted in an odd man rush the other way. Stingrays forward Maxime Lacroix blasted a shot behind Daigeault at 14:37 locking the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
In the final period, the Stingrays scored what would wind up as the winning goal when Trent Campbell stuffed the puck past Daigneault after a failed clearing attempt by the Checkers in their own zone. Charlotte pulled their goalie with a minute left to no avail and would lose by a score of 3-2.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game will take place on Nov. 13th against the South Carolina Stringrays at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $396.
