Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - Scott Munroe made 31 saves as the Philadelphia Phantoms shutout the Albany River Rats 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Times Union Center.

The Rats' first ever 1:00 pm home start meant that the puck dropped less than 15 hours after the team's Friday night game had ended in Springfield. Though neither Albany nor Philadelphia looked particularly sluggish, the first goal wouldn't come until 17:46 of the first period. Phantoms left wing Steve Downie finished off a two-on-one rush by faking out River Rats goaltender Daniel Manzato and sliding a backhand shot into the open net. Philadelphia out-shot Albany 14-7 in the period and left the ice with the 1-0 lead.

Early in the second period Phantoms forward Jonathon Kalinski was awarded a penalty shot at 7:40, but Manzato thwarted his attempt with a solid pad save. However, at 10:59 the Phantoms doubled their lead when defenseman Nate Guenin sent a long pass from the defensive zone to a waiting Patrick Maroon, who had just hopped off the bench. Maroon received the pass, skated in on a breakaway and lifted a backhander inside the far post for his first goal of the season, assisted by Guenin and the goaltender Munroe.

With 31 seconds remaining in the second period tempers flared around the Albany goal and a two-man brawl broke out. Downie raised his stick in an aggressive motion towards the face of River Rats rookie Nick Dodge, inciting captain Tim Conboy to jump in to protect his teammate. Downie received a two-minute minor for high-sticking and a five-minute fighting major, while Conboy was handed 29 minutes in penalties (two for unsportsmanlike conduct, two for instigating, five for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct for instigating and a game misconduct).

The River Rats tried to get back into the game in the final frame, but Philadelphia effectively slowed down the pace of play. Despite out-shooting the Phantoms 11-4 in the third period, Albany could not get on the board as Munroe stopped everything he faced. Danny Syvret scored an empty net goal at 19:45 to cap off a 3-0 victory.

Scott Munroe made 31 saves for the win and his first shutout of the season, helping the Phantoms improve to 2-5-0-0 on the season. Albany goaltender Daniel Manzato stopped 28-of-30 shots, but took the loss as the River Rats fell to 1-4-1-0. The River Rats out-shot Philadelphia 31-30 and went 0-for-4 on the power play; Philadelphia finished the game 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Notes: Munroe increased his current shutout streak at the Times Union Center to 165:44, having not conceded a goal in Albany since the 17:14 mark of the second period of Game 5 of the East Division Semifinal of the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Albany now has a week to prepare for their next game on Halloween night, Friday, October 31st. That evening the River Rats will welcome their former captain Keith Aucoin and the Hershey Bears to the Times Union Center for a 7:00 pm face off.

River Rats flex ticket packages and individual game tickets are on sale now at the River Rats office and the Times Union Center Box Office. For more information please contact the Albany River Rats at (518) 487-2244 or online at www.albanyriverrats.com.
