2007-08 North Division Champions Host Three Games This Week

MARLIES HEADLINES:

Pogge Standing Tall: In the Marlies first four games this season, Justin Pogge has started all of them. He's notched a record of 1-2-1 and has posted a 2.78 goals-against average and a 0.909 save-percentage. He has posted a solid 2.30 goals-against average at Ricoh Coliseum this season. The Marlies starting goalie is the club's all-time leader in wins (46), games played (93), and shutouts (seven). Last year he posted a record of 26-10-4 with a 2.34 goals-against average and 0.908 save-percentage.

Penalty Kill: The AHL`s best penalty kill during the 2007-08 season, is a stellar 12-for13 killing penalties on home ice so far this season. Through four games, they rank sixth in the league with an 87.5% success rate. They've given up only two power play goals through four games. Darryl Boyce potted the Marlies first shorthanded tally of the season against Lake Erie on Oct. 12 to knot the game at 3-3 late in the third period. Alex Foster set a Marlies franchise record last season with five shorthanded goals.

Unveiling the Banner: The Marlies opened up the 2008-09 season by unveiling their North Division championship banner from the year before. The Marlies won their division with a 50-21-3-6 record for 109 points, nine more points then next closest Syracuse (100 points). Toronto has 15 current players that helped them to their title berth on the opening day roster.

Multi-Point Games: Kris Newbury tallied a three-point game on Saturday night vs. Hartford. The Marlies all-time leading point scorer, tallied two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal. Also that night, Marlies alternate captain, Jaime Sifers notched a goal and an assist, along with a game-high plus-three rating. Stefano Giliati, Brent Aubin and Alex Foster all contributed with two-point games on Sunday, October 19 vs. Grand Rapids. Aubin tallied two goals and Giliati and Foster added assists on both of his markers. Richard Petiot also has a multi-point game this season, when he tallied a goal and an assist on Sunday, October 12 at Lake Erie.

Making Their Debut: The Marlies have dressed eight new players through their first four games this season. Defencemen Richard Petiot, Andy Schneider, Juha Uotila and Josef Boumedienne; forwards Andre Deveaux, Tim Stapleton and Mark Bell have all seen action in at least one game for the Marlies. Adam Munro made his Marlies debut on Sunday, October 19 in a relief effort, backing up Justin Pogge. Munro made 16 saves in the effort. Petiot, Bell, Stapleton and Deveaux each have recorded a point through their first four games. Newcomer, Tim Stapleton scored the Marlies first goal of the 2008-09 season in the third period and also scored in the shootout on Friday night against the Binghamton Senators.

Behind The Bench: Assistant coach, Doug Gilmour made his coaching debut last Friday night behind the Marlies bench. The Marlies coaching staff of Greg Gilbert, Joe Paterson and Doug Gilmour has 2,602 career NHL games of experience. Combined the three have accumulated 1,848 NHL points and four Stanley Cup championships. Gilmour played in 392 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, collecting 452 points (131 goals, 321 assists) and represented the Leafs at the 1993 and 1994 NHL All-Star Games.

MARLIES QUICK HITS:

- Kris Newbury, Alex Foster and Jaime Sifers are tied for the team lead with three points each so far this season. The Marlies have eight players that have two points and three players that have recorded one point. Newbury and Brent Aubin are tied for the team lead with two goals.

- Jaime Sifers, Ben Ondrus and Darryl Boyce lead all Toronto skaters with a plus-two rating and Andre Deveaux leads the team and is ranked 12th in the AHL with 23 penalty minutes.

- Former Marlies forward, John Mitchell recorded his first career NHL point (assist) on Monday, October 13 vs. St. Louis. He made his NHL debut in the Leafs season opener last Thursday against the defending Stanley Cup Champs, the Detroit Red Wings. Mitchell led the Marlies in goals last season during the regular season and playoffs.

- The Marlies host the Hamilton Bulldogs for the first of 12 meetings this season this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Toronto hosts the Quad City Flames and the Houston Aeros on Saturday and Sunday at Ricoh Coliseum, with both games beginning at 4:00 p.m. The game on Sunday is Tomas Kaberle bobblehead night at Ricoh Coliseum.

- The Marlies currently rank sixth in the North Division with a 1-2-0-1 record through four games. This week they play one division opponent (Hamilton) and two from the West Division (Quad City and Houston). This will be the only time this season that the Marlies play the Quad City Flames and Houston Aeros at Ricoh Coliseum.

- The Marlies won the North Division last season with a record of 50-21-3-6 for 109 points. The 109 points set a Maple Leafs affiliate record.

RBK/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE For the week ending October 19, 2008, the Toronto Marlies nominated forward Kris Newbury for consideration as the RBK/AHL Player of the Week. The Brampton, Ontario native finished the three points (two goals, one assist), including a game-winner in two games this week. All of Newbury's damage was done on Saturday night versus the Hartford Wolf Pack.

IN THE BOOTH:

The Marlies and Rogers Cable TV announced last week their 29 game broadcast schedule, which will comprise of Friday, Saturday and Sunday home dates. The television play-by-play duties will be handled by the voice of the Marlies, John Bartlett, who returns for his fourth season with the organization. Former NHLer and Toronto Maple Leaf, Bob McGill, will join Bartlett in the booth for all 29 games.

The Marlies announced on Friday, October 10 in conjunction with the FAN 590, that all 80 regular season games will be live on the FAN 590. Marlies play-by-play announcer, along with colour commentator, Bob McGill will provide the live action for Marlies fans this season. IN THE COMMUNITY

On Friday, October 24 at the Legends Centre in Oshawa, Marlies forward Max Taylor will drop the puck and be part of the Oshawa Minor Hockey Associations opening ceremonies. The puck-drop will officially begin the local tournament.

Recap: The Marlies won their first game of the season, 4-1 over the Hartford Wolf Pack, led by strong goaltending by Justin Pogge and a three-point evening by Kris Newbury. Jaime Sifers opened the scoring under a minute into the game. After the Wolf Pack tied the game at 1-1, Newbury netted his first of the night to put the Marlies back on top. Staffan Kronwall extended the lead to 3-1 with the Marlies first power play tally of the season. Newbury added an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining to complete his three-point night. Mark Bell scored his first point (assist) in a Marlies uniform. Pogge made 30 saves in the victory. Sifers registered a goal and an assist, and a game-high plus-three rating.

Recap: The Marlies couldn't sweep both weekend games, losing to their division-rival, Grand Rapids, 7-3. After the Griffins took a 2-0 lead, Ben Ondrus notched his first of the season after Robbie Earl circled around the goal and fed a pass out front that deflected off Darryl Boyce's stick first. After the Griffins scored their fourth goal to put them ahead 4-1, Adam Munro came into the game to replace Justin Pogge. It was Munro's first action of the season. Brent Aubin recorded his first two goals of the season in the third period. Alex Foster and Stefano Giliati earned assists on both of Aubin's tallies.
