North Carolina FC News Release
Cary, NC (Thursday, October 2, 2008) - The United Soccer Leagues announced the finalists for MVP, Coach of the Year, Defender of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards today and RailHawks midfielder Martin Nuñez was among the finalists for the best newcomer of the 2008 USL-1 season with Osvaldo Alonso of the Charleston Battery and Vicente Arze of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
"Martin led the rookies in goals scored and was tied in Team of the Week honors with Osvaldo Alonso," said RailHawks Head Coach Scott Schweitzer. "He has had a phenomenal season and is an exceptional playmaker and attacking midfielder. He should hold his head up high no matter what the results are and should be very excited about his bright future."
A speedy midfielder, Nuñez helped the RailHawks win their second consecutive Southern Derby Cup and was instrumental in the final few games of the season, almost helping the RailHawks to post-season play. He led the finalists for the award in goals and was second on the RailHawks with five goals and two assists for 12 points.
Nunez left Georgia Perimeter College after one year in which he scored 30 goals to pursue a professional career. He spent some time training with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer and was offered a developmental contract which he turned down to come and play in North Carolina.
The RailHawks continue to be active in this off-season with work in the community by visiting schools and stressing the importance of staying fit and healthy. The RailHawks 2009 season ticket drive is underway and for the occasion the RailHawks are offering an all-inclusive season ticket package that includes all pre-season, exhibition, regular season, US Open Cup and playoff matches for one low price.
