Lexington Legends News Release
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) ---- The Lexington Legends announced today they have received the rights of the famed Ty Cobb from the Omaha Royals. In exchange for the young Cobb and in the spirit of the late Hall of Famer with the same moniker, the Royals will receive a bottle of Maker's Mark Kentucky Bourbon, a box of cigars and a copy of the 2003 film "Anger Management".
Cobb, who spent the 2008 season as the Royals Marketing Intern, will join Lexington's staff in October in the team's Marketing and Creative Services Departments.
The Royals are the Kansas City Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha (Neb.) and is owned by Ivy Walls Management Company, the same majority owner of the Lexington Legends, the Houston Astros' Class-A afiliate in Lexington.
"Our staff had a tough time parting ways with the perfectly drinkable bourbon, but we're incredibly excited to have him join our team," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "One of his first duties as a Kentuckian will be to visit the Maker's Mark distillery, so he can see first-hand what we gave up for him and exactly how much we value him in our company."
Cobb and the Omaha Royals marketing staff was recently honored as one of the six minor league promotions to earn ESPN The Magazine's annual Veeckie Award for their August 15th promotional night entitled "Ty Cobb Night". The intern was featured in a retro uniform on a baseball card, which was given away to fans, and was the prized date in a bidding contest during an on-field promotion.
"We appreciate what Ty Cobb did for our franchise this season," said Omaha Royals General Manager Martie Cordaro. "We wish him nothing but the best and our staff will have a great time watching 'Anger Management'."
The Omaha Royals' Director of Media Relations Kevin McNabb contributed to this report.
