Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Shawn Snider. Last season, Snider (5'10/185) (27) scored twenty-one goals and assisted on twenty-two others (forty-three points) and picked up seventy-seven penalty minutes in thirty-five games for the Orebro HK Vipers in Division 1 in Sweden. Snider, who will be entering his fourth year as a pro, was the fourth leading scorer for Orebro last season, where he also had the second best plus-minus on the team, playing to a (+35).

Prior to turning pro, Snider, who hails from Fergus, Ontario, played 218 major junior games in the Ontario Hockey League and three seasons of Canadian university hockey at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Snider's most productive season in the OHL came in 2000-01 with the Owen Sound Attack, when he led his team with seventy-six points (27g-49a) and racked up ninety-six penalty minutes in 61 major junior games. For his efforts that season, Snider was selected as the Most Under-Rated Player in the OHL's Western Conference in the Coaches' Poll.

After completing his major junior career in 2002, Snider moved on to St. Francis Xavier, where he scored a total of eleven goals, picked up seventeen assists, and registered seventy-six penalty minutes in seventy-six regular season Canadian university games. In his first season with the X-Men, 2002-03, Snider and his teammates went all the way to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship Finals before getting knocked off by the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres. The following year, Snider and the X-Men avenged that loss by defeating the University of New Brunswick in double-overtime to capture the first men's ice hockey national championship in the history of St. Francis Xavier.

In 2005-06, Snider joined the Phoenix Roadrunners of the ECHL, where he scored twelve goals and assisted on fourteen others (twenty-six points) in seventy games and became the first player in team history to represent the Roadrunners in the ECHL All-Star Game. In that game, which was played at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, Snider scored a goal and picked up an assist as he and his National Conference teammates took a 7-6 decision over the American Conference.

In 2006-07, Snider split the season between three teams in the then-United Hockey League, beginning the season with the Kalamazoo Wings before being moved to the Bloomington PrairieThunder and, ultimately, to the Flint Generals. In seventy-one total games that season, Snider scored twenty goals and assisted on forty-three others (sixty-three points), a large bulk of those points coming after being traded to Flint in early January of 2007. In fact, while with Flint, Snider went on quite a tear, registering forty-two points (14g-28a) in the final forty regular season games of the year and picking up five points (3g-2a) in Flint's six playoff games.

The Royals open the 2008-09 regular season against the Elmira Jackals on Friday, October 17, 2008 at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The Royals' home opener is set for Saturday, October 25, 2008, when the Johnstown Chiefs visit the Sovereign Center. Royals' full Season Tickets and Total Choice Flex Plans are now on sale.
