Worcester Tornadoes News Release

BROCKTON -- Matt Weagle was solid for Worcester, but the Tornadoes could not capitalize with men in scoring position, as they dropped the rubber game against Brockton, 4-2, on Sunday evening at Campanelli Stadium.

The Rox jumped ahead first with a sacrifice fly by Dennis Abreu that plated Melvin Falu, who had led off the first inning with a double. Worcester starter Matt Weagle was able to work his way out of a bases loaded jam later in the same inning by forcing Jason Colson to groundout to first base. The Tornadoes answered quickly in the top of the second as Francisco Caraballo led off with his 16th homer of the season, which tied him with his teammate Scott Grimes for second in the league. Much like Weagle, Brockton starter John Kelly loaded the bases up after the home run, by allowing a single and two walks, but he stranded all three runners.

After Worcester left them loaded again in the fourth, Brockton's Eduardo Rios vaulted the Rox ahead with a 2-out 2-run homer to right field in the fifth. The Rox held a 3-1 advantage until the seventh, as the Tornadoes scored an unearned run when B.J. Weed bowled over Brockton catcher Lee Rubin at the plate on Alex Trezza's ground ball. The collision jarred the ball loose from Rubin and Weed went back to touch home to make it 3-2. Worcester had numerous other chances to add to their run total, but went a combined 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position, while stranding a total of 14 runners on the base paths for the game (nine of those in scoring position). Brockton added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by Rubin.

John Kelly (7-5) picked up the win for the Rox, going six innings, allowing just one run on six hits while walking four and striking out four. The Tornadoes threatened in the ninth but left another man in scoring position as Jerry Dunn earned his second consecutive save against Worcester, his league-leading 20th on the year. Matt Weagle (9-7) pitched well in defeat, throwing six complete innings giving up three runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking none.

The Tornadoes enjoy a day off on Monday, and then are back at home for a six-game homestand on Tuesday when they welcome the New Jersey Jackals to town for the first game of a three-game series. Worcester will send righty newcomer Kyle Jackson to the hill to face New Jersey righthander Tom Atlee. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Tuesday marks the start of the final homestand of the season for Worcester which is highlighted by Back to School Night/Fireworks Show on Friday, Aug. 22, Fan Appreciation Night/Fireworks Show on the Saturday the 23rd, and Tykes Club on Sunday the 24th!
