Last Match

Earthquakes 3, Los Angeles Galaxy 2; Aug. 3, 2008; McAfee Coliseum; Oakland, Calif.

A goal from defender Ryan Cochrane in the last minute was the difference as the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 at Oakland's McAfee Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The Quakes had opened a two-goal lead in the first half, as Arturo Alvarez and Darren Huckerby scored. But before the half was out, Landon Donovan pulled a goal back for the Galaxy, then late in the second half, Edson Buddle netted a score for LA that seemed to secure the point, until Cochrane's late heroics. San Jose picked up Alvarez, who is making his second tour of duty with the Earthquakes, from Dallas earlier in the week. Head Coach Frank Yallop inserted him in to the starting lineup at forward. The move paid off almost immediately, as in the eighth minute he opened the scoring. From the left wing, Huckerby centered a pass to Scott Sealy at the top of the penalty area. Sealy's one-touch pass found Alvarez racing up the middle, and he bent a left-footed shot past Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin cleanly inside the right post. San Jose doubled its lead in the 40th minute when Eric Denton knocked the ball forward for Huckerby. LA defender Chris Klein slipped, allowing Huckerby to come in alone on goal from the left wing. From a tough angle, Huckerby's shot slid past Cronin to the far post for a 2-0 Earthquakes advantage. LA then battled back, getting a goal back almost immediately. In the 42nd minute, a David Beckham free kick from 35 yards out found Donovan for a header from six yards out. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon made the save, pushing the ball off the crossbar, but San Jose couldn't clear the rebound. The ball got back out to Beckham on the right wing, and he sent another cross to the net. This time, Donovan's header from the top of the six cleanly beat Cannon inside the left post for his league-leading 13th goal of the year. Still down a goal, in the 75th minute, the Galaxy brought in Carlos Ruiz and switched to 3-4-3 formation as they searched for an equalizer. They got it less than a minute later, after Edson Buddle got the ball about 30 yards from goal. Buddle danced through the San Jose defense, taking advantage of a collision between defenders Nick Garcia and Ryan Cochrane to score from 20 yards out. But in the end, it was San Jose coming out on top. In the waning moments, a Corrales cross from the right wing was knocked away by Cronin, and Huckerby pounced on the loose ball. Huckerby's shot from 15 yards out shot was saved, but the rebound fell to Cochrane, who put it away to give San Jose the win.

Last Match vs. New England

New England 2, Earthquakes 0; May 17, 2008; Gillette Stadium; Foxborough, Mass.

The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 2-0 decision to the New England Revolution on May 17 at Gillette Stadium. Two first-half goals by the Revolution put the Quakes in a deep hole, and despite a solid second half, San Jose could not get back into the game. The Revolution jumped on the board first with a goal from a set piece in the sixth minute. Steve Ralston curled a free kick into the box for Shalrie Joseph. Joseph flicked the ball past one defender right into the path of Kheli Dube. Dube then one-timed the ball past Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon for a 1-0 lead. The deficit increased to two goals midway through the first half following an own goal from the Quakes James Riley. The ball was deflected into the air at the edge of the penalty box and Riley attempted to head the ball back to Cannon, but he sent his header over the Quakes 'keeper and into the empty net. The goal came in the 23rd minute. Frank Yallop brought on Ryan Johnson at halftime and Shea Salinas in the 57th minute to help spark the Quakes attack. Johnson created the Quakes first clear opportunity of the second half with a run right at the heart of the Revs defense in the 59th minute. He burst past a defender and then slid a pass to Kei Kamara on his right. Kamara eluded two defenders and unloaded a low shot, but it was blocked by the defense. Midway through the second half, Johnson nearly broke through again as he got past a defender and into the box. However, before he could shoot, he had the ball deflected away by the Revolution defense. Cannon kept the deficit at two with a big save on Sainey Nyassi in the 69th minute. Nyassi hit a shot from distance that forced him to make a diving save. The rebound fell to Kenny Mansally, but his close-range effort went over the bar. The Quakes generated some late attacks, but could not get on the board against the Revolution defense. The best of the chances came in the 90th minute off the foot of Ramiro Corrales. The Quakes center midfielder received the ball and blasted a shot from 25 yards out that beat Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis and struck the crossbar.
