Lewis Wins Pitcher of the Week Honors

August 11, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Aeros LHP Scott Lewis was named Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today for the week ending August 10th. It is the sixth time an Aero has received a weekly award this season, and Lewis is the first since OF Trevor Crowe won Player of the Week honors for the week ending June 30th. He is the third Akron pitcher to win the award as LHP David Huff and RHP Randy Newsom each won Pitcher of the Week awards earlier this season.

Lewis was unbeatable in two starts last week, working 13.1 innings and allowing just one unearned run in two of Akron's four wins on a road trip to Altoona and Trenton. On August 4th, Lewis limited the Curve to just one hit and two walks in 5.2 innings, earning the win in Akron's 3-1 victory. He set a new season-high for Aeros pitchers with 10 strikeouts in the outing.

Saturday, Lewis took a no-decision after working 7.2 innings at Trenton, while allowing just an unearned run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Lewis left with the game tied at 1-1, but the Aeros scored twice in the ninth to beat the Thunder 3-1.

With his two spectacular starts this week, Lewis continued a seven-start string of dominance over Eastern League hitters in which he has allowed just two earned runs. In that stretch that spans 44.1 innings, Lewis boasts a 3-0 record and a 0.41 ERA with 41 strikeouts and just five walks. He has also lowered his season ERA nearly three full runs from 5.28 to 2.33.

On the year, Lewis is 6-2 with a 2.33 ERA with 61 strikeouts and just nine walks in 73.1 innings. He has pitched extraordinarily well away from Canal Park, going 3-1 with a 0.52 ERA in six starts on the road. The Aeros are 9-4 when Lewis starts, and he did not join the Aeros until June 6th after spending the first two months of the season recovering from a strained left lat muscle he suffered during spring training. The Indians selected Lewis in the third round (77th overall) in the 2004 June Draft out of Ohio State University. Lewis, who is on Cleveland's 40-man roster, was 7-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 games for the Aeros a season ago and led all of minor-league baseball with a 1.48 ERA with Class A Kinston in 2006.

The Aeros begin a six-game homestand Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as they welcome the Connecticut Defenders to Canal Park for the only time this season. Akron sends Steven Wright (3-1, 4.33 ERA) to the mound against Connecticut's Joey Martinez (7-9, 2.65 ERA). It will be Two-for-Tuesday at Canal Park with tickets and select concession items going two for the price of one. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
