Springfield Cardinals News Release

Matt Pagnozzi's two-run double down the left-field line in the bottom of the 13th inning, gave the Springfield Cardinals a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Tulsa Drillers on Monday night at Hammons Field.

The win for the Redbirds (25-20) pulls them to within three games of first place Northwest Arkansas (28-17), who fell to the Arkansas Travelers for a second straight night.

Pagnozzi's heroics off of Drillers' closer Ryan Matheus (2-3) saved Jonathan Mikrut (3-3), who surrendered a go-ahead home run to Neil Wilson in the top of the inning, as Wilson's solo shot to left broke the 4-4 deadlock.

Allen Craig's 20th home run of the year, a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, knotted things up until the 13th, as Tulsa had gone ahead with three runs in the top half of the eighth inning against Cards' reliever Josh Dew.

Daniel Carte's RBI single to center field off of Dew put Tulsa up 2-1. After Jim Rapoport threw a man out at the plate, Dew was removed in favor of Cards' reliever Zack Zuercher. Eddie Cornejo and pinch-hitter Tony Blanco followed with consecutive run-scoring hits to right field, making it a 4-1 game.

Monday was a tremendous pitcher's duel for seven innings, with both starters pitching well.

Springfield starter Kyle Mura allowed just one run on seven hits over six strong innings in the no-decision. The only run Mura allowed was a solo home run off the bat of Carte in the fourth, his tenth of the year, which tied the game at 1-1.

Tulsa starter Brandon Hynick one-upped Mura, tossing seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Hynick was touched for a run in the second inning, as Matt Pagnozzi's RBI groundout scored Andrew Brown from third base, giving Springfield a temporary 1-0 lead.

Mark Shorey singled in his first at-bat, setting a Cards' franchise record with his eighth straight hit. He fouled out in the fourth inning, ending the streak at eight straight hits over his last three games.

The Cards take Tuesday off to travel to Texas, as they head to San Antonio and Corpus Christi as part of a six-game road trip. The Cards and Missions open their three-game series from San Antonio on Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Left-hander Justin Fiske (1-0) will take on San Antonio's Will Inman (8-5) in the series-opener. The Redbirds will return to Hammons Field on Wednesday, August 13th, as they take on San Antonio in the opening game of a six-game home stand. Tickets are available for all home games at Hammons Field by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
