Bank of America Pitcher-Player of the Week Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the week ending July 27th:

Connecticut Defenders catcher Pablo Sandoval has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 27th. The 21-year old had an excellent week for the Defenders, batting .421 (8-for-18) with two doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, three runs scored and a .842 slugging percentage over four games. Sandoval, who is a native of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, had multiple hits in three of the four games he played in during the week, including going 3-for-7 with a double, a home run and six RBI in an 18-6 win at Portland on Tuesday night. The 5'11", 245 lb. slugger joined the Defenders in late June after receiving a promotion from Class-A San Jose, where he hit .359 with 25 doubles, 12 homers, 61 runs scored and 59 RBI in 68 games and was selected as a California League All-Star. Pablo, who was a member of the World Team in the 2008 Futures Game and drove in one run in the game, was signed by the San Francisco Giants as a non-drafted free agent on May 8, 2003.

Brett Cecil, a left-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 27th. Cecil, who is ranked by Baseball America as the second best prospect in the Toronto organization, made a pair of starts for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 2-0 with 14 strikeouts and a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. The 6'3", 220 lb. hurler made his first appearance of the week last Tuesday night against visiting Trenton and surrendered one run on six hits while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings to earn the win. Cecil made his second start of the week on Sunday afternoon at Reading and earned his sixth win of the season after giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters in six shutout innings of work. Brett, who pitched for the Northern Division in the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays as a supplemental first round pick in the 2007 draft out of the University of Maryland.
