Boston Cannons News Release

BOSTON, MA - Friday, July 18, 2008 - The Boston Cannons (5-3) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) will face-off against the Washington Bayhawks (3-5) in their second meeting of the 2008 season at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland, on Saturday, July 19 at 7:00 PM.

CANNONS VS. WASHINGTON IN 2008: Midfielder Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins '08) netted four goals and one assist to earn Bud Light MVP honors and goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) made 20 saves as the Boston Cannons were victorious over the Washington Bayhawks in the first match-up of the season by a score of 14-12, in front of 8,279 fans at Harvard Stadium on June 19. With the win, the Cannons increased their record to 3-2 and posted consecutive wins for the first time since the 2006 season. Rabil opened the scoring with the first two goals of the contest, at 1:17 and 2:40, to give the Cannons a 2-0 lead and put on a show for the home town fans in his first game at Harvard Stadium since being selected by the Cannons first overall in the MLL Collegiate Draft on May 28. The Bayhawks cut the early lead in half with a goal, but once attackman Matt Alrich (Delaware '04) gave the Cannons a 3-1 lead with his first goal of the game, the visiting Bayhawks were never able to get back within two goals. Alrich totaled three goals in the victory, as did midfielder Matt Poskay (Virginia '06). Poskay also collected an assist, for four total points against the Bayhawks.

CANNONS' LAST GAME (JULY 12 VS. LONG ISLAND): Attackman John Christmas (Virginia '05) earned Bud Light MVP honors with his game-winning goal, with just five seconds left on the game clock, as the Boston Cannons defeated the Long Island Lizards, by a score of 13-12, in front of 9,178 fans at Harvard Stadium on July 12. Midfielder Matt Poskay (Virginia '06) netted six goals in the Cannons' victory. The defensive units for both teams dominated the first quarter, with the Cannons and Lizards only scoring a combined five goals in the segment. After some back-and-forth action in the second frame, the Cannons finished the half with an 8-5 lead over the Lizards, but the home team was held scoreless in the third quarter, allowing the Lizards to tie the game at 8-8. The Cannons jumped out to a 10-8 lead in the final segment, but from there the Lizards stole some momentum and scored three unanswered goals to take an 11-10 lead until the Cannons tied the game with midfielder Brian Jacovina's (UMass '07) first MLL career goal. The Lizards briefly took the lead again, but Zummo countered just 28 seconds later to tie the game once more. Christmas' perfectly-timed game-winning goal came from a long-range pass by Tom Zummo (NYIT '05), as he beat Lizards goalie Matt McMonagle (Cornell '07) with just five seconds remaining on the game clock, to give the Cannons a 13-12 victory over their Eastern Conference rival. Cannons goalie Kip Turner (Virginia '07) earned his fifth win of the season with 14 saves on the 26 shots he faced in the contest.

WASHINGTON'S LAST GAME (JULY 12 AT ROCHESTER): For the third time in three seasons, the Washington Bayhawks were held to six or fewer points in their 19-6 loss to the Rochester Rattlers at PAETEC Park on July 12. Washington was shut out in the first and third quarters en route to their fourth straight defeat. The Rattlers started the game on a 5-0 run and ended the first half with a 10-3 lead. After playing into the start of the fourth quarter, Rattlers goalie Mike Levin (Brown '04) was replaced by goalie Brett Queener (Albany '08) who saved eight of the nine shots he faced. Nine Rattlers players scored goals en route to their 19-6 win. The game was the most lopsided loss for the Bayhawks this season, as the 19 goals against were the most they have allowed, and their six goals for were their fewest yet this season. Bayhawks attackman Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Maryland '01) scored his 100th career goal on the power play at the start of the fourth quarter.
