Winston-Salem Dash News Release
KINSTON, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs came up a few feet short in dropping the series opener to Myrtle Beach 5-4 on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. Down a run entering the ninth inning, the Warthogs put runners on first and third with one out against Pelicans closer Nick Fellman. But Paulo Orlando went down on strikes and C.J. Retherford's towering fly ball fell into the glove of Willie Cabrera, who had his back to the wall in deep, left center to end the game.
Myrtle Beach loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning against Matt Long and was able to bring two runs across to grab the early lead. Willie Cabrera and Eric Campbell hit back-to-back run scoring singles in the inning to hand the Pelicans a 2-0 advantage. Myrtle Beach added another run in the third inning when Tyler Flowers hit a leadoff triple and scored on a ground out by Brandon Hicks.
C.J. Lang led off the third inning with a solo home run off Ryne Reynoso to trim the Pelicans lead to 3-1. It was Lang's first home run of the season. Myrtle Beach tacked on a run in the fifth inning when Ernest Mejia drove in Hicks with a double to push the Pelicans advantage to 4-1.
Lang was not satisfied with just one home run as the Warthogs infielder blasted another solo shot to lead off the fifth inning and cut the Pelicans lead to two. Myrtle Beach answered right back as Tyler Flowers lined an RBI single off Matt Zaleski in the sixth to move in front 5-2.
Winston-Salem put a pair of runs on the board in the eighth inning when Orlando and Retherford led off the frame with back-to-back singles. John Shelby III lined an RBI single and Salvador Sanchez brought another run home with a single to bring the Warthogs within a run at 5-4.
Reynoso (8-6) tossed 5 1/3 innings and limited Winston-Salem to two runs on four hits to garner the win. Fellman wiggled out of the mess in the ninth inning to collect his fourth save of the season. Long (4-9) lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out a season-high nine batters.
The second of this three-game series is set for Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will hand the ball to RHP John Ely (3-10, 5.09), while the Pelicans are expected to start RHP Kyle Cofield (6-6, 3.81). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
