Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
-TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: Following an off day in Winston-Salem, the Pelicans will lace up the cleats and begin a three-game set against the Warthogs. The Pelicans have utterly outmuscled the Warthogs this season, taking nine of the eleven meetings. The Pelicans are coming off a series split against the Frederick Keys. The Birds are 4-1 in games following an day off.
In the series finale against the Keys, the Pelicans clocked three home runs in an 8-6 win. Scott Diamond picked up his staff-high eighth win of the season in five innings of work.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: The series opener will pit two right-handers as Ryne Reynoso takes the ball for the Pelicans against Matt Long for the Keys.
Reynoso: Second on the staff in wins with seven. Coming off a no-decision against the Salem Avalanche (7/11), where he went five innings and allowed seven hits and five runs. He left the ball up and surrendered a season-high three home runs. It was the third time that Reynoso allowed multiple home runs in a start. In a career high 92.0 innings, he has given up 87 hits and 37 earned runs. Reynoso has earned five of his seven wins away from BB&T Coastal Field. He has allowed by far the most runs in the second inning (13 ER). The Warthogs are the only team to face Reynoso only one time.
The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.
Long: Enters tonight's start following his finest outing of the season. In seven innings against the Frederick Keys (7/11), he allowed only one hit and no runs. He also struck out a season-best eight, while walking only one batter. After starting the season in the bullpen, Long became a starter on May 3rd. In 12 total starts, he is 3-5 with a 4.61 ERA. Long has proven excellent command, as clear by his 70:26 strikeout to walk ratio.
The Granville, OH native went 9-3 with a 5.43 ERA last season for the Kannapolis Intimidators. In 2006, he was rated the #9 prospect in White Sox chain according to Baseball America. Played collegiately at Miami, where he is second on the single-season saves list with nine. He was drafted twice (2002-- LA Dodgers & 2005--San Francisco Giants) and did not sign with either.
3,2,1...BLAST OFF: With their three home runs against the Keys, the Pelicans set the franchise mark for home runs in a single-season. Back in 1999, the Pelicans hit 105 home runs, a record that stood until now. With 45 games still remaining in 2008, the Pelicans have already smashed a Carolina League best 108 long balls. Travis Jones (15), Jon Mark Owings (15) and Brandon Hicks (15) lead the way in a very balanced power attack.
JONES CONTINUES STREAK: Pelicans second baseman Travis Jones will put his season-long 15-game hitting streak on the line tonight. Willie Cabrera notched a Pelicans season-high 18-game hitting streak from May 30th through June 17th. The Pelicans franchise record is 20 games, set back in 2006 by J.C. Holt. Niuman Romero of the K-Tribe is currently riding a Carolina League best 20-game hitting streak. Jones has reached base safely in 20 straight games, which is the second longest active streak in the Carolina League.
BOTTOM OF THE ORDER...TOP OF THE CHARTS: The Pelicans seven through nine batters (Travis Jones, Concepcion Rodriguez and Jon Mark Owings) are putting up middle of the order type numbers. Travis Jones is hitting .259 with 15 home runs and 53 RBIs. Concepcion Rodriguez is hitting .292 with six homers and 37 RBIs. Jon Mark Owings is hitting .293 with 15 homers and 52 RBIs. Jones and Owings are tied for the team lead in homers and rank second and fourth respectively in RBIs. The series finale against Frederick was a perfect example of the bottom of the order production. The three combined to go 4-11 with 5 runs scored and four RBIs.
