'Kings use seven-run fifth to take Game Two

O'Fallon, MO - The big inning got the River City Rascals and Danny Powers Saturday night, as the Kalamazoo Kings scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take game two of the series 9-4.

Powers (3-4) made a strong start contributing seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings, but tripped up in the fifth when he gave up seven hits including a grand slam. As a staff the Rascals struck out 16 Kings on the night.

The Rascals scored a run in the fourth inning when Brad Hough doubled to right field and scored on a Phil Laurent single to center. But River City could not hold the 1-0 lead long. An inning later Kalamazoo produced six hits, including the grand slam by Joe Ramos to put the Kings up 7-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Rascals trailed 9-1 when Rascals catcher Curt Marshall hit his first home run of his professional career.

It was Jeff Miller who helped the Rascals cause in the eighth when he blasted a ball over the center field wall for a two-run home run, his tenth made it 9-4 and ended the scoring.

Joe DiPietro (2-3) picked up the Kalamazoo win pitching six innings and allowing just one run. The Rascals bullpen allowed two runs on the night and struck out nine, five of which were struck out by Jonathon Miller who went 2.0 innings allowing no runs and no walks. Powers took the loss for the Rascals.

The River City Rascals (23-27) and the Kalamazoo Kings (31-19) will decide the series Sunday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. This Sunday night is US Cellular Family Day and fans can bring their dogs to the ballpark and get autographs signed by Rascals players following the game. Also, be one of the first 1,000 fans through the gates and receive a Phil Laurent Bobble Head from AmerenUE.
