Lancaster Stormers News Release

Talk about putting on the brakes in time to avoid trouble.

Josh Hall was reached for seven hits and five runs in a span of two innings, then settled down in time to retire nine of the last 10 hitters he faced as Lancaster held on for a 7-5 victory over Bridgeport in the opener of the second half at Harbor Yard.

Lancaster grabbed a 5-0 lead off Barry Hertzler (3-6) in the second inning. Greg Blosser reached on a grounder up the middle on which Henry Mateo and Alex Prieto collided. Blosser moved to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch. He held his ground as Lloyd Turner reached on an error by third baseman Luis Lopez. Lancaster took a 1-0 lead on a ground single up the middle by Jutt Hileman. Kevin Kotch ripped a two-run triple into the right field corner for a 3-0 edge. The inning continued to build as Juan Francia walked. Mike Woods singled to right, scoring Kotch and sending Francia to third. Francia scored when Jesse Hoorelbeke's throw to the plate was late on a grounder by Danny Gonzalez. The next two Barnstormers struck out.

Brian Munhall smoked a double down the third base line to start the third and scored on a one-out infield single by Travis Ezi. Henry Mateo bounced a single over the head of Turner at third, advancing Ezi two bases. Ezi scored on a wild pitch by Hall (5-1), and Mateo came around on a single to right by Luis Lopez.

The Barnstormers stretched the lead on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Blosser in the fourth, and Bridgeport surged forward again. Jay Caligiuri started the home fourth with a single off the top of Danny Gonzalez' glove. Munhall followed with a single to right center, and both runners advanced on a bunt by Prieto. Ezi fanned, but Mateo delivered a two-run single to cut the lead to 6-5.

Bridgeport managed only one more baserunner in the game. Munhall was hit by a pitch in the sixth and was promptly thrown out stealing by Kotch.

Hall departed after seven innings. Ryan Cullen pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts, and Judd Songster did likewise in the ninth to earn his first save.
