Same Result, Different Day...The Aeros won for the third straight game and sixth time in seven contests on this current eight-game road trip, blowing out Binghamton 14-5 last night. Akron got huge nights from 3B Wes Hodges and C Wyatt Toregas, who combined to go 6-10 with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, four runs scored, and nine RBI. LHP Ryan Edell delivered his third straight quality start and eighth overall of the year, limiting the B-Mets to just a run on five hits in six frames. The southpaw also did not allow a walk, and has issued only one free pass in his last three starts (spanning 18 innings). Akron is now a season-high 22 games over the .500 mark, and the Aeros have won 22 of their last 28 road games.
Dynamic Duo...With Hodges and Toregas pacing the offense, Akron never trailed last night while improving to 33-6 when scoring first this season. Hodges got Akron on the board with a two-run triple in the top of the first, and then scored after tripling again in the fifth. Toregas got into the act later in the frame, greeting reliever Eddie Camacho with a two-run double to left to score 1B Matt Whitney and CF Nathan Panther to push the advantage to 8-1. Toregas capped his night with a three-run homer in the seventh, and Hodges added a two-run blast in the eighth. The home run for Toregas was his sixth in just 47 at-bats with the Aeros, after hitting only two dingers in 155 ABs with Class AAA Buffalo to begin the season. Hodges is also on an impressive power pace, becoming the first Aero to reach double-digits with his 10th bomb of the year.
Use the FOUR-ce...Toregas was named Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week today, as the native of Fairfax, VA hit .421 (8-19) with three doubles, five homers, six runs scored, 13 RBI, and a 1.368 slugging percentage in six games. In case you didn't catch this fact the first time through, let's put it another way: All eight of his hits week this went for extra-bases. The man did not single in six games! Toregas is the fourth straight Aeros hitter to win an Eastern League weekly award, preceded by Wes Hodges for the week ending June 15th and Trevor Crowe the last two weeks.
Matt the Bat...1B Matt Whitney has simply dominated Binghamton pitching in this series, hitting .462 (6-13) with a double, a homer, three runs scored, and a whopping eight RBI in the first three games of this four-game set. Whitney's four-RBI night on the 4th of July led the Aeros to an 11-inning triumph, and he drove in both runs in Akron's 2-1 victory Saturday. Last night the native of West Palm Beach, FL went a perfect 3-3 (and also walked twice), collecting only his second three-hit game of the season and driving in runs with an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the seventh.
Did You Know...With these last three wins the Aeros are now 5-4 against Binghamton on the season, and the Aeros have a winning record against every Eastern League team except Trenton (1-1) this year.
