LAST GAME: Elizardo ramirez pitched eight quality innings for his eighth victory, and Nelson Cruz provided the game winning runs with his 26th home run of the year as Oklahoma beat Iowa 7-3. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first and held a slim 3-2 advantage in the seventh when Cruz hit a three-run blast under the scoreboard in centerfield to put the RedHawks in the lead for the first time in the game. Oklahoma added two insurance runs in the eighth and snapped Iowa's seven-game winning streak.
54 TO GO: Nelson Cruz hit his 26th home run of the season in Saturday night's win, matching Nate Gold's team-high tally from all of 2007. Adam Hyzdu led Oklahoma in 2006 with 19 home runs, and Jason Botts hit 25 to lead the 2005 RedHawks. The single-season home run record belongs to Dave Roberts, who hit 38 in 1965. Cruz is two home runs shy of tying for tenth place in Oklahoma City Triple-A history (Scott Sheldon- 28 in 1999).
NOT SO DIRTY DOZEN:
Nate Gold has a 12-game hitting streak entering play tonight. The RedHawks first baseman hit a leadoff home run in the second inning last night to extend his streak and helped tie the game at one at the time. Gold's streak matches Jason Ellison's April run for the third longest streak by any RedHawks this season, and extends his longest hitting streak as a member of the Oklahoma roster, spanning this and last season.
WELCOME BACK:
Nelson Cruz returned to the RedHawks lineup after a day off Friday. Cruz had three hits last night to extend his home hitting streak to 15 straight games, and raised his average back to a team-high .349 mark. The Oklahoma outfielder missed Friday's game resting his sore left arm.
NOTHING BUT QUALITY:
Elizardo Ramirez earned his eighth win of the year last night, notching his eighth quality start in 13 tries. No other RedHawks starting pitcher this season has more than five quality starts. Ramirez threw 128 pitches in the victory, the highest pitch count from any RedHawks starter this season.
SHELTON RETURNS:
Chris Shelton was designated for assignment by Texas on June 26 and sent outright to Oklahoma earlier today. Shelton hit .216 with a pair of home runs and 11 runs batted in for Texas over 41 games after his contract was purchased on April 29. He had played in 14 games during the month of April for Oklahoma, with hits in 12 of the 14 and has an active seven-game hitting streak when he steps into the box for the RedHawks.
IOWA AT A GLANCE:
Casey McGehee extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games last night, while Micah Hoffpauir extended his streak to seven straight and Jason Dubois extended his to eight consecutive games. Koyie Hill went 0-4 to see his streak snapped at six games.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas beat Baltimore 5-3... Frisco blanked Springfield 3-0... Bakersfield lost 9-5 to Lake Elsinore... Clinton pounded Burlington 13-1... Spokane beat Eugene 13-3.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Former Oklahoma RedHawks Ian Kinsler and Michael Young were selected to participate in the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium on July 16. It is the first time Kinsler has been selected, and the fifth straight year for Young.
