Lookouts hold off Braves

The Mississippi Braves welcomed the Chattanooga Lookouts to town along with Atlanta Braves Jeff Francoeur and Matt Diaz on Independence Day at Trustmark Park. 7,086 fans, the largest crowd at Trustmark Park this season, watched the Lookouts hold on to defeat the M-Braves, 5-4.

Jeff Francoeur got the Braves on the board in the fourth. He singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Francoeur came around to score on a double by Kala Ka'aihue. After four, the Braves led 1-0.

Chattanooga tied it in the top of the fifth. Chris Valaika doubled to right and moved to third on a 4-3 groundout by Shaun Cumberland. Valaika scored on a single by Craig Tatum to knot the game at one.

The Lookouts broke the tie in the top of the seventh. Sean Henry led off with a double. He stole third and scored when the throw from JC Boscan sailed into left field giving Chattanooga a 2-1 advantage. Shaun Cumberland walked and stole second before scoring on Tonys Gutierrez's single up the middle. After the top of the seventh, the Lookouts led 3-1.

The added two more runs in the eighth on a double by Henry. Heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Lookouts led 5-1.

Mississippi cut into the lead in the eighth. Matt Young led off the eighth with a pinch hit single and Francoeur and Ka'aihue followed with singles. Young came in to score on KK's single up the middle to cut the lead to 5-2. The Braves went on to load the bases, but couldn't get anything else out of the rally.

The Braves plated two runs and got the tying run on first in the ninth, but couldn't get him home as they lost 5-4.

Todd Redmond gave up three runs on six hits through seven innings and left the game trailing 3-1. He fell to 7-4 on the season. Sung Ki Jung gave up two runs in his inning on the hill. Brad Nelson threw a scoreless ninth.

Travis Wood gave up a run on two hits through six frames and improved to 2-4 on the year. Lee Tabor threw a scoreless two-thirds and Derrick Lutz gave up a run in his inning of work. Robert Manuel struck out the only batter he faced and Carlos Fisher held on to earn his seventh save of the year.

Mississippi will take on Chattanooga again Saturday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Mississippi's Tommy Hanson will take on Chattanooga's James Avery in the second game of this four-game set.

On Saturday night the M-Braves will honor the Air-National Guard and have an appearance by Jake the Diamond Dog. There will be another Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza following the game and a silent auction where fans can bid on awesome Braves' memorabilia during the game.
