Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Jesse Darcy allowed one run over 6.1 innings to lead the Columbus Catfish to a come-from-behind doubleheader split with the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 5, 027 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs won the first game, which was the completion of the contest that began in Columbus on June 21 that was suspended by rain, by a 6-2 margin while the Catfish battled back to take the nightcap, 2-1.

With the split, Charleston is 2-5 in the season's second half and 47-30 overall while Columbus is 6-1 since the All-Star break and is 33-44 on the season. The Catfish are 4-1 against Charleston the past week.

Darcy remains unbeaten on the season and improves to 4-0 as he surrendered one run and four hits while striking out four in the seven-inning contest. Austin Hinkle relieved Darcy with one out in the seventh and earned his sixth save.

In the nightcap, Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the second when Jesus Montero opened the inning with a double and moved to third on Austin Romine's single. Montero scored the game's first run on Brandon Laird's RBI single to left against Darcy.

Columbus retaliated with two unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead that wasn't relinquished.

Omar Luna doubled with one out and moved to third on a fielding error by RiverDogs right fielder Austin Krum. Maiko Loyola plated Luna with a single to left and promptly stole second. Shawn O'Malley then reached on a fielding error by the pitcher Lance Pendleton, moving Loyola to third, and Loyola scored on Chase Fontaine's groundout to second to plate the go-ahead run.

Charleston out-hit Columbus, six to four, with Bradley Suttle leading the RiverDogs with a pair of doubles. No one had multiple hits for the Catfish.

Pendleton (6-3) went five complete innings and allowed both runs on four hits while walking four. Former College of Charleston standout Nick Chigges threw the final two frames and walked one and fanned one.

In the first game the RiverDogs took advantage of a season-high five double-plays and a second-inning grand slam by Taylor Holiday to thwart the Catfish.

In the first inning in Columbus on Saturday, Abraham Almonte led off with a triple to left center and scored after Justin Snyder reached on a throwing error by first baseman Henry Wrigley to give Charleston a quick 1-0 lead.

Brandon Laird reached on an error in the second inning and the bases were then loaded with consecutive singles by Carmen Angelini and Dave Williams. With one out, Holiday blasted a grand slam over the left field wall giving the RiverDogs a 5-0 lead. Its was Charleston's second grand slam homer of the season, and the first since April 10.

Then the rain came in the bottom of the second and the game was suspended until Thursday night in Charleston.

After picking up the game where it left off on Thursday, the Catfish pushed one run across in the fifth on an RBI single by O'Malley. Columbus, acting as the home team in Riley Park, added their second run in the seven on Omar Luna's run-scoring single.

Charleston scored its sixth and final run in the eighth on Austin Romine's RBI single to left center.

The RiverDogs collected 10 hits with Holiday, Williams and Romine each securing a pair, while Luna paced the Catfish with two of their eight hits.

Ryan Zink (1-1) picked up the win for Charleston in relief of Saturday's starter Wilkins de la Rosa. Zink pitched 3.2 innings and scattered three hits and allowed one unearned run.

Jesse Hoover threw three complete frames and surrendered one run on two hits while Chase Vacek tossed the final inning and permitted a pair of hits.

Columbus starter Jason Ragan, who began the game Saturday, suffered the loss that dropped his mark to 5-6 as he lasted two innings and allowed five runs on five hits.

The final contest in this four-game block is set for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. with southpaw Wilkins de la Rosa (3-1, 2.47 ERA) going for Charleston while Columbus is slated to start northpaw Jason Ragan (5-5, 3.23 ERA).
