Cards fall to Travs

June 17, 2008 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers rallied on multiple occasions, outlasting the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings on Tuesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. The victory gives Arkansas a better record within the North Division, and therefore by way of the second tie-breaker in the Texas League, also the First Half North Division Crown.

Down to their final at-bat not just once, but twice, the Travs rallied from a 4-3 ninth-inning deficit and a 6-4 deficit in the 11th. Adam Greenberg's single over right-fielder Casey Rowlett's head, drove home the winning run and capped a three-run inning, giving Arkansas a First Half Pennant for the first time since 2001.

Leading 6-4 in the bottom of the 11th, Luke Gregerson (3-4) couldn't hold on to the lead, as the first four Arkansas hitters reached via a single. Corey Smith's RBI single drove home Brian Stavisky to make it 6-5. Jordan Czarniecki followed with an RBI single to bring home Ben Johnson, tying the game at 6-6. Michael Collins followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners up to second and third. Gregerson was removed in favor of left-handed reliever Justin Fiske, who entered and promptly issued a walk to Brian Walker to load the bases. With the bases loaded and just one out, Greenberg singled over the drawn-in Cardinal outfield for the game-winner, scoring pinch-runner Anderson Rosario.

Springfield took the lead in the 11th inning, when Matt Pagnozzi walked and Shane Robinson and Jon Jay delivered back-to-back doubles, giving Springfield a 6-4 advantage.

The Redbirds let it get away late in regulation, as Fernando Salas gave up solo home runs to Nate Sutton in the eighth and again to Michael Collins in the ninth, with the Travs down to their final out.

Cards' starter Jess Todd pitched well, working seven solid innings. The offense gave Todd some early support, as Springfield scored the first four runs on Tuesday night.

The Redbirds took advantage of a lead-off walk issued by starter Fernando Rodriguez in the second, as Tyler Greene scored on a groundball off the bat of Jose Martinez, making it 1-0. Springfield got two more in the third to go up 3-0. Allen Craig delivered an RBI single to plate Shane Robinson, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead. Rodriguez would be removed later in the inning, as reliever Daniel Davidson came out of the Arkansas bullpen after Rodriguez lasted just 2 2/3 innings. Davidson allowed Craig to score on a wild pitch, making it a 3-0 game.

Springfield got a run off of Davidson in the fourth, as Craig ripped a two-out double off the top of the wall in center field, bringing home Jon Jay to make it 4-0.

Arkansas started their rally in the fifth, as Czarniecki took Todd's first pitch over the fence in left-center field, making it 4-1. Corey Smith lined a two-out single to score Ben Johnson in the sixth, making it a two-run game at 4-2. Todd would leave with a 4-2 lead after seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, with four strike outs.

Salas gave up a lead-off home run to Nate Sutton in the eighth, closing the gap to one at 4-3. Down to their last out, Collins took Salas opposite-field, into the Arkansas bullpen to tie the game at 4-4 in the ninth.

Arkansas reliever Ryan Aldridge (1-0) got the win by recording the final out of the 11th.

Adam Ottavino (0-4) will take on Brok Butcher in the opening game of the Second Half, on Wednesday night. First pitch for game three of the four-game series on Wednesday will be 7:10pm from Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

The Cards will be on the road through this weekend, before returning to Hammons Field to host the 72nd Texas League All-Star Game presented by Great Southern on June 25th. Tickets are still available for this historic event by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field very soon. Go Cards and Get Your RED On!
