Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - Three Tourists errors and a pair of big innings from the Greenville Drive powered the Drive to a 7-3 win to split the three-game set headed into Sunday's rubber match.

Trailing by a run in the seventh inning, Cory Riordan (6-4) loaded the bases before giving way to Matthew Reynolds. Mike Jones stepped in first to face the new pitcher and drove in a run with a single off Reynolds' ankle, and then after two outs, Ty Weeden drove in a pair with a crushing single up the middle to give the Drive an extra three-run cushion in the seventh, an inning that began on an Asheville fielding error.

Asheville drew first blood in the ballgame when Jeffrey Cunningham deposited his 12th home run over the right field fence - a two-run shot - to give the Tourists a 2-0 lead. The T's would add another when Helder Velazquez's two-out double plated Darin Holcomb to put Asheville ahead by three.

In the fourth, the Tourists were bitten again by the error bug. With a runner on second and one out, an error by Velazquez put two aboard for Ryan Kalish's RBI double. That hit put two aboard to set up Yamaico Navarro's three-run home run to left field, giving the Drive a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Riordan was the hard luck loser, giving up seven runs with only three earned, on two walks and five strikeouts. His only mistake pitch was taken out of the ballpark in the third inning by Navarro.

Felix Doubront (7-3) picked up the win for the Drive, tossing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The third and final game of the series comes on Sunday when Robinson Fabian (0-1, 6.75) makes his Asheville debut against righty Eammon Portice (4-4, 3.88). Fans can bring their pooches out to the park on the annual Doggies at the Diamond Day on Sunday. First pitch is at 2:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM, 100.7.
