Connecticut Defenders News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT- Connecticut made it four in a row as they edged out the Rock Cats in New Britain 6-3 in the first of three against their cross state rival.
The Defs continued their momentum from Monday's contest as they scored two runs in the top of the first. Antoan Richardson drew a one-out walk, Kyle Haines took a free pass of his own as Travis Ishikawa knocked home Richardson with a single. Adam Witter delivered a base hit with two outs to plate Haines as Connecticut took a 2-0 lead.
Richardson sparked a rally in the fifth as he drew another walk with one out. Richardson swiped second (his 15th of the season), and came home on an RBI single by Ishikawa. Eddy Martinez-Esteve inside-outed a double down the right field line to score Ishikawa all the way from first as Connecticut took a commanding 4-0 lead.
Adam Cowart was dealing in New Britain as he allowed just one base hit through four innings of work. He was touched up a bit in the fifth however, as Dustin Martin singled home Matt Moses to make it 4-1 Defenders.
New Britain continued their success at the plate in the home half of the sixth as Trevor Plouffe and Luke Hughes came around to score on a run scoring groundout and a single to make it 4-3 Defs.
Connecticut, unhappy with their one-run advantage, decided to go after a couple of insurance runs. The top of the eighth began with a flair base knock off the bat of Martinez-Esteve, Witter walked, and Simon Klink belted an 0-2 pitch to left field to bring home Martinez-Esteve as Witter moved to third. After a walk by Dave Maroul and a foul out off by Jake Wald, Ben Copeland lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Witter to give the Defenders a 6-3 advantage.
Justin Hedrick threw a couple innings of scoreless relief to set Cowart up for his third win of the season, as he fanned three in two innings of work. Osiris Matos tossed the ninth and allowed a run but secured his fifth save in as many tries to give Connecticut a 6-4 win.
The Defs will take on New Britain on Wednesday at 10:35am and you can catch all the action at ctdefenders.com as your hometown team looks for win number five in a row.
