Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-2) topped the Pensacola Pelicans (3-3) on Wednesday night at the Birdcage, 5-3. The Canaries got two RBI from each Josh Patton and Ben Van Iderstine.

The Pelicans struck first, scoring in the top of the third inning. Cesar Aranguren singled and advanced to third on a double by Rafael Alverez. Brandon Sing followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Aranguren. On the play, Alverez was thrown out at third on a relay throw from Van Iderstine to Patton to Grant Richardson. The double play ended the inning, but the Pelicans took a 1-0 lead.

The Canaries responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, thanks in part to two Pelican errors. Tim Hutting walked and advanced to second safely when Brandon Sing threw the ball into left field on a ground ball by Will Smith. Richardson laid down a bunt to move the runners over, but too was safe when Pensacola third baseman Cesar Aranguren misplayed the ball. With the bases loaded, Patton grounded out to score Hutting, and Van Iderstine singled to plate Smith and Richardson. After three innings, the Canaries led, 3-1.

Pensacola got one back in the fourth. Javier Lopez singled and moved to second on a balk by Canaries starter Ryan Ford. Ricardo Cordova doubled to score Lopez and cut the Birds lead in half, 3-2.

The Pelicans tied the game in the seventh. Dylan Parzyk singled and advanced to third after a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt. Parzyk scored from third on a groundout by Sean Gamble, tying the game, 3-3.

The Canaries went ahead to stay in the bottom of the seventh. Kennard Bibbs singled and got into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Hutting. Smith singled to score Bibbs for a 4-3 lead. The Birds added one more run in the eighth on Josh Patton's first home run of the season for the 5-3 final.

Ford received no decision, pitching 6.1 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits. Javier Garcia (1-0) got the win for the Canaries in relief, pitching 1.2 perfect innings. Kris Regas picked up his second save in as many days, striking out the last two batters Pensacola sent to the plate.

Sioux Falls will go for the series sweep against Pensacola at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night at the Birdcage. The Canaries will send Lenny Bays to the hill seeking his first win of the season, and the Pelicans will counter with Dane DeValk who will also be looking for his first win. Thursday will be the Canaries "High School Musical Face-Off" presented by the U.S. Army.
