Defenders Win Big 19-5

May 3, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY- The Defenders hadn't scored more than 7 times in a game before Saturday's contest against the B-Mets. Connecticut thrashed that mark as they put an astounding 19 up on the board in a 19-5 drumming over Binghamton.

Anemic, lethargic, non-productive were all adjectives used to describe the Defender offense in 2008. They had only scored more than five runs in a ballgame four times this season, but May 3rd was a different day.

The Defenders jumped out in the first inning as Kyle Haines doubled, Ben Copeland doubled Haines home, and Travis Ishikawa hit a two-run bomb to put Connecticut up 3-0.

Connecticut was right back on the horse in the third as Copeland launched a solo homer to right field, Ishikawa doubled, Eddy Martinez-Esteve doubled home Ishikawa and Dave Maroul brought Martinez-Esteve to the plate on a single to make it 6-2 Defs.

One more in the fourth, two in the fifth made it 9-3 Defenders, as they were just getting started.

A scoreless seventh made way for a ridiculous eighth. Kelvin Pichardo, a reliever led off with a single as three consecutive singles from Brad Boyer, Kyle Haines and Copeland plated one run. Martinez-Esteve walked to bring in Boyer from third to bring up Maroul. One day ago, Maroul hit his first homer of the year, Saturday he blasted a four-run shot to left field to extend the gargantuan lead to 15-3.

For some reason, the Defenders didn't feel as if they had scored enough. In the ninth, Boyer singled, Haines walked and Ishikawa was put on intentionally to set up a righty-righty match-up with Olmo Rosario. Rosario hadn't homered since the very first home stand. That streak ended abruptly as Rosario clobbered a grand slam to left center to give Connecticut an immeasurable 19-3 advantage.

The Defenders gave two back in the ninth as they won in a big way, 19-5. Boyer had a three hit game, as did Ishikawa and Maroul (who also drove in 5). Copeland went 4-for-6, and was a triple away from the cycle as he crossed home plate 4 times. Dave McKae was credited with his second win of the year.

Connecticut will face off against the B-Mets in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. For further information visit ctdefenders.com or call the front office at (860) 887-7962.
