Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jon Searles and four relievers combined on a three-hit shutout Tuesday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers opened their road schedule with a 2-0 loss at Long Island.
Searles (1-0) held the Barnstormers (2-2) to two hits over six innings while walking two and striking out five. Ryan Klippschild walked the lone batter he faced, but Ben Grezlovski, Tom Martin and Joe Valentine each fanned two hitters in an inning to nail down the win.
The Barnstormers' leadoff man reached base in six separate innings including the last five, but that runner reached third on only one occasion on a double by Lance Burkhart and deep fly by Vasili Spanos in the fifth.
They had another opportunity in the sixth. Mike Woods stroked a leadoff single off the glove of shortstop Donaldo Mendez and moved to second on a sacrifice by Danny Gonzalez. Matt LeCroy was plunked by Searles, giving the Barnstormers a second runner. Brian Stavisky worked the count to 2-2 before spanking a liner at Mendez. Woods was caught off second for an inning ending double play.
A leadoff walk to Stavisky and two-out single by Spanos gave the Barnstormers a final opportunity in the ninth, but Valentine struck out Jutt Hileman looking for the final out, recording his second save.
Long Island (3-1) picked up its two runs in the sixth. Michael Nannini (0-1) walked Carl Everett to start the inning, and then threw a wild pitch to advance him to second. Kevin Haverbusch produced the first run with a double down the stripe in right. He moved to third on a grounder by ex-Barnstormer Dominick Ambrosini and scored when Spanos threw low to first after fielding a grounder by Damian Rolls.
NOTES: Lancaster was 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position...The club is 1-for-20 in RBI situations in the last two games...The error by Spanos was the first by a Barnstormers this season after 29 2/3 flawless innings...Stavisky, Bladergroen and Hileman all lost their three-game hitting streak...Woods, Spanos and Burkhart have hit safely in all three games they have played...The series continues on Wednesday night with a matchup of Opening Day starters - Zack Parker (0-0) for the Barnstormers and Randy Leek (1-0) for the Ducks...Game time is 6:35.
