Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Pelicans rewrote nearly every offensive season high as they clobbered the Salem Avalanche 13-1 in the series opener at BB&T Coastal Field in front of 3,226 fans. The Pelicans scored multiple runs in four different innings, including a season high six in the bottom of the fourth.

The barrage of runs started in the bottom of the first when Brandon Hicks launched a two strike changeup from Avalanche starter David Qualben into "Land Shark Landing". Since his return to the lineup on April 22nd, Hicks is 6-11 with five runs scored and five RBIs. Later in the inning, with Brandon Powell at second and Willie Cabrera at third, Ernesto Mejia laced a two run single into right field to put the Pelicans up 3-0.

After the Pelicans tacked on two more runs in the second thanks to defensive mistakes by the Avalanche, they put the game out of reach in the fourth inning.

The Pelicans sent ten batters to the plate and recorded season highs of seven hits and six runs to bury the Avalanche in a 11-0 hole. The back-breaking hit in the inning was a Willie Cabrera double that scored Brandon Hicks, Tyler Flowers and Brandon Powell.

Right handed starter Tommy Hanson (3-0) turned in another superb outing. He displayed dominating stuff in his longest outing of the season. Hanson pitched through seven innings and allowed just four hits and one run. In 29.0 total innings of work this season, Hanson has allowed only 10 hits and one earned run. In the eighth, Hanson turned the ball over to Ferdin Tejeda, who proceeded to put the finishing touches on the most impressive victory of the season.

Offensively, the Pelicans combined for their most balanced offensive attack of the season. Eight different Pelicans recorded at-least one hit, while four Pelicans registered multi-hit games. Additionally, three Pelicans notched multi-RBI nights for the first time this season. Cabrera and Mejia each produced three runs, while Hicks knocked home two. Even further, seven different Pelicans scored at least one run. Brandon Hicks led the charge in that category with three runs scored.

The Pelicans are back in action on Friday, April 25th at 7:05 PM. An excellent pitching matchup is on the docket as Bruce Dal Canton will send RHP Deunte Heath (3-0, 1.50) to the hill and the Salem Avalanche will counter with lefty ace Polin Trinidad (2-0, 1.88).
