Hensley Returns To The Diamond
April 22, 2008 - California League (CalL) Lake Elsinore Storm
Lake Elsinore, CA - Former Storm pitcher Clay Hensley will be making a rehab start at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore tonight April 22nd against the High Desert Mavericks. Hensley, who had labrum surgery on his right shoulder in September, will make his first start of the year on Tuesday when he throws one inning -- or roughly 25 pitches -- for the San Diego Padres Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm. Clay pitched for the Storm in 2003 after being traded from the San Francisco Giants organization for Major League veteran Matt Herges. He went 3-4 with a 3.45 era striking out 40 California League hitters in just 44.1 innings pitched.
After spending 2004 with the Double-A Mobile BayBears, Clay was promoted to the big leagues where he pitched in the bullpen for the Padres in 2005. He started 29 games for San Diego in 2006 ending with a record of 11-12 and a 3.71 earned run average over 187 innings of work. Last year, Hensley began the season in the starting rotation before being placed on the disabled list with a strained groin. He proceeded to pitch between Portland and San Diego for the rest of the before undergoing season ending surgery on his right shoulder on September 21, 2007.
Clay has been pitching in extended Spring Training in Peoria, Arizona. "I'm looking forward to Tuesday, pitching in a serious game," Hensley said by phone on Monday from San Diego. Hensley said the plan is for him to pitch for Lake Elsinore on Tuesday and then again Friday for Triple-A Portland, when the Beavers visit Las Vegas. General Manager Kevin Towers said there's no set timetable for Hensley. He would like to see Hensley get "two or three weeks of consistent innings."
