Bulls outburst not long enough in loss to Columbia

Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC-A dramatic eight-run fourth inning capped off by Jeremy Owens's three-run home run ignited the crowd Thursday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, but it was all the offense they produced as the Columbus Clippers ultimately won by a score of 11-8.

Lefty Mike Prochaska was greeted rudely by the Clippers, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and an error before recording the second out of the inning. He would give up two more on four hits in his fourth and final inning. In the bottom of the frame, Reid Brignac singled, Chris Richard doubled and Joel Guzman walked to load the bases with two out. The Bulls exploded with a bases-clearing Hector Gimenez double, a Josh Johnson single, a Jeff Bannon double and a Fernando Perez single. Mike Bacsik came on to relieve Tyler Clippard (3.2, 7 H, 7 ER, 6 SO) in a 1-0 count and immediately gave up Jeremy Owens's first home run of the year to give the Bulls an 8-7 lead.

But the Bulls' bullpen could not hold. Kevin Lynn (0-1, 2.35) did not retire a batter, giving up doubles to each of the three batters he faced, allowing two to come home. Dale Thayer and Nick DeBarr pitched four scoreless innings, but Brian Henderson allowed two insurance runs in the ninth. Bacsik (1-1, 3.46) settled down, combining with Charlie Manning and Brian Sanches (S, 3) to hold Durham scoreless the rest of the way.

Larry Broadway batted five times and doubled for each of his three hits, scoring three and driving in two for Columbus. Owens and Gimenez both drove in three for Durham, with Johnson and Bannon knocking home the other two Bulls runs.

The Bulls and Clippers meet for the final time in the 2008 regular season Friday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Right-hander Mitch Talbot (0-2, 11.12) gets the nod for Durham as righty Jason Bergmann makes his first Triple-A start of the year, following three appearances with the Washington Nationals (0-1, 11.68). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
