Kane County Cougars News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Jake Smith had three hits and three RBIs Thursday night to lead the Kane County Cougars to a 6-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts in front of 7,613 at Oldsmobile Park. The victory, which started a six-game road trip, was the Cougars' third in a row and 13th in 14 games this season.
The Cougars never trailed, thanks to three first-inning runs against Lansing starter Brad Mills (1-1). Corey Brown and Greg Dowling hit consecutive run-scoring doubles, and Todd Johnson grounded out to score Dowling for a 3-0 advantage.
After starter Jamie Richmond gave up his first tally in the second, the Cougars made it 4-1 in the third on Smith's two-out RBI double. Lansing crept within a run, though, in the fifth. Richmond left with no outs and two men on base, and Justin Friend induced a double play but then allowed consecutive run-scoring hits for a 4-3 score. Richmond gave up two runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout in four-plus innings.
The Cougars expanded their lead permanently in the seventh off Brian Pettway, as they loaded the bases to set up a two-out, two-run single by Smith for a 6-3 game. Friend (3-0) left with one out in the eighth, and Branden Dewing retired all five batters he faced for his second save.
Game 2 in the three-game set is Friday night at 5:05 CT. The Cougars (13-1) will send Scott Mitchinson (1-0, 2.00) to the mound, and Lansing (8-6) will counter with Luis Perez (0-1, 9.82).
