Avalanche to Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Ramen Noodles

March 27, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (March 27, 2008) - the Salem Avalanche, Advanced Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, will be hosting their first annual "Salute to Ramen Noodles Night" on Friday, April 18 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Ramen Noodles are a staple in the diet of most college students. Modern instant noodles were invented in Japan by Taiwanese/Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin Foods. His noodles were boiled with flavoring, deep-fried with palm oil to remove moisture, and dried into a noodle cake. Other preservation methods have been tried, including preservation with salt and smoke, but Ando concluded that palm oil is the most efficient.

"I survived college on Ramen Noodles," said Giles Cochran, Food Service Manager for the Avalanche and a recent graduate of UVA-Wise. "I would have two packs of Top Ramen in one meal. Mmm. Very filling."

According to a Japanese poll in the year 2000, instant noodles were the most important Japanese invention of the 20th century. Karaoke came second, with the Compact Disc coming in fifth. As of 2005, approximately 85 billion servings of instant noodles are eaten worldwide every year. China consumes 44 billion packs of instant noodles per year, or 51% of the world's consumption; Indonesia consumes 12 billion and Japan 5.4 billion. Per capita, South Korean people eat the highest number of instant noodles, 69 packs per year.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of instant Ramen Noodle soups, the Avalanche will be giving away a package of the delicious noodles to the first 1,000 fans on April 18, 2008 prior to their home game versus the Lynchburg Hillcats. Fans not wishing to put the noodles on the menu at home will have an opportunity to donate their package to the Salem / Roanoke County Food Pantry.

The Avalanche will also be offering $1 off Box Seat Tickets with the presentation of instant Ramen Noodles or other non-perishable food items for donation to the Salem / Roanoke County Food Pantry. Other Ramen-related promotions will include a "Use Your Noodle" trivia contest, a Ramen Recipe Contest and a non-sanctioned competitive Ramen-noodle eating contest.
