Wheeling Nailers News Release
DAYTON, OH - Curtis Darling made 49 saves in regulation, three in overtime and three more in a shootout to power the Wheeling Nailers to a 2-1 win over the Dayton Bombers Wednesday night at the Nutter Center. It was his third 50-plus save performance of the season and second in the past four games.
The Nailers have now won three of their last four games and three consecutive games away from home.
Darling came within 3:34 of notching his third shutout of the season. He turned aside 21 of the 22 shots he faced in the third period but Greg Labenski's shot from the point tipped off of Corey LeClair and through Darling to tie the game 1-1.
Sean's Berkstresser's first professional goal was the only goal through the first 40 minutes of play. The rookie, playing in just his third game scored just 33 seconds into the second period as he tipped a rebound past Rejean Beauchemin. Kevin Croxton fought the puck out from behind the net and earned an assist on the play with Jon Krall.
Despite outshooting the Bombers 6-3 in the five-minute overtime the game headed into a shootout. Both goaltenders stopped the first shooter and after another Darling save, Kevin Croxton buried his third shootout goal of the season. Darling then stopped Masahito Nishiwaki before Aaron Clarke put the Nailers up 2-0 in the shootout after three shooters. Petr Pohl kept his team alive by beating Darling but Sean Collins promptly ended the game by rolling a shot of Beauchemin's glove and into the net.
Wheeling hosts the Johnstown Chiefs on Friday at 7:35pm. It is West Virginia University night as Mountaineer greats Major Harris and Mike Logan will be on hand signing autographs from 6-7:15pm.
