Aeros Power Play Helps Houston to Shootout Win

March 25, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Peoria Rivermen News Release

The Houston Aeros scored a pair of third period power play goals to force a shootout, defeating the Peoria Rivermen by a 3-2 count at the Toyota Center Tuesday night.

Chris Porter put Peoria ahead 1-0 after 20 minutes of play when he took a puck at the side of the Aeros net and battled for a shot that beat Barry Brust at 8:16 from Jim Jackson and Trent Whitfield.

Peoria brought more pressure early in the second period, culminating in Whitfield's goal at 2:51 to make it a 2-0 lead. Jim Jackson and Alex Brooks combined to get a shot through from the left point that caromed off the end boards and over the stick of Eric Neilson at the side of the Aeros goal. The puck continued to bounce up the slot until Whitfield corralled it, driving the disk past a sprawling Brust for his 20th goal of the year.

Houston's power play woke up in the third period, netting a pair of goals that tied the game. First Ryan Hamilton scored just 1:48 into the frame from Jon Awe and Brandon Rogers. Then with a sixth attacker on the ice and Porter in the box for hooking, Joel Ward wrapped the puck in front around Ben Bishop to tie the game at 19:16.

The teams pushed on to the shootout, where despite having only one goal in the regular season, Shawn Belle played the hero beating Bishop for the lone marker of the shootout while Brust stopped all five tries against.

The Rivermen will now move on to play San Antonio on Thursday night at 7 pm to continue the road trip. The Rivermen Pre-Game Show with Tom Callahan kicks off one half-hour before puck drop on your Home for Rivermen Hockey, 96.5 ESPN Radio.
