Blast Selects Five Players in 2008 MISL Amateur Draft

Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Blast selected five college players in today's MISL Amateur Draft. The Blast chose Pat Healey in the Territorial Round of the Draft and had the fifth selection in each of the draft's five rounds. The team selected two defenders, two midfielders and one forward.

Healey, the son of Blast President and General Manager Kevin Healey, was the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and led the CAA with eight goals and nine assists. The 5-11, 160-pound midfielder was also drafted last week by the Kansas City Wizards in the first round of the MLS Supplemental Draft and finished his career as Towson's eighth-leading scorer. Healey was a three-time All-CAA selection and a two-time NSCAA/ADIDAS All-South Atlantic Region player.

"I am happy with our 2008 draft picks," said Blast General Manager Kevin Healey. "I am very familiar with all five players and look forward to them contributing to the Baltimore Blast."

Baltimore chose Bryan Moffa from UMBC in the first round. Moffa, a 5-10, 155-pound defender, was a Second-Team All-America East selection after leading the Retrievers with five assists in 18 games. The graduate of Eastern Tech High School (Baltimore) tallied 64 assists in his career and was a member of the America East All-Rookie team after recording three assists during the 2004 season. In the second round, Baltimore chose Chris Cox, a midfielder from Hofstra University. Cox, a native of Nottingham, England was a three-time All-CAA selection and recorded six goals and one assist (13 points) last season. In four seasons he helped lead the Pride to 45 wins, three CAA Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Blast chose St. John's University forward Omar Alfonso in the fourth round and Matt Davis, a defender from George Washington University, in the final round. Alfonso, who transferred to St. John's after three years at Loyola College in Maryland, tied to lead the Red Storm last season with nine points (four goals and one assist). He scored 26 goals and added 19 assists in three seasons at Loyola. Davis, who is from Upper Marlboro, Md., was the Colonials' co-captain in 2007 and 2006. He tallied two assists in 16 games last season.

The five-round Major Indoor Soccer League Amateur Draft was held this afternoon via conference call. The draft consisted of one territorial round and four standard rounds of selections. Draft order was as follows: 2007-08 expansion Orlando Sharks, Monterrey La Raza, New Jersey Ironmen, California Cougars, Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave, Philadelphia KiXX, Chicago Storm and then the Detroit Ignition.

The Blast (9-7) ranks fifth in the MISL and is on a three-game winning streak. The team will host the Chicago Storm this Friday night at 8 p.m. and the Orlando Sharks at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday.
