Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - Monday's game between the Dayton Dragons and the South Bend Silver Hawks was the final tune up before the two teams meet Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. South Bend jumped out to a big lead early, and held on for the 8-5 victory over the Dragons in front of 8,211 fans at Fifth Third Field.

After Anthony Gressick (ND) started and went 1.0 inning in a tune up outing, Jamie Arneson (LP, 1-3) took over and struck out the side in the second. Arneson found some trouble in the third, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. Daniel Perales picked up the biggest hit of the inning, as he lined a bases loaded double down the left field line to bring in the first two runs of the ballgame. Arneson settled down, stranding runners at second and third, but South Bend had the early 2-0 lead.

The Silver Hawks got two more against Arneson in the top of the fourth, with Richard Mercado hitting a solo home run and Joey Side getting an RBI double for the 4-0 lead. It became 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Brad Miller hit his 22nd home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line.

Dayton got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Eric Butler (WP, 5-4). With Jason Louwsma at third and Denis Phipps at first, Jake Long singled to left, scoring Louwsma for the first Dragons run of the game. It was the first RBI in a Dragons uniform for Long, bringing the team within four.

In the top of the sixth, Terrell Young (ND) entered the ball game and got the first two outs rather easily. But four straight hits afterwards, including RBIs from Side, Taylor Harbin, and Perales, extended the South Bend lead to 8-1.

Dayton answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth against Chase Christianson (ND). Drew Stubbs tripled to start the inning, and scored when his former University of Texas teammate Carson Kainer drove him in with a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

The Dragons made it an 8-4 ballgame when the newest Dragon, Brandon Waring, picked up a pinch hit two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth against Jason Urquidez (ND). It was the first at-bat in a Dragons uniform for Waring, who joined the team today from Billings .

Logan Parker added an RBI in the bottom of the ninth inning on a double, scoring Billy Rojo, and bringing the Dragons within three at 8-5. Evan Scribner (ND) settled down and got the final few outs to close out the game.
