Whitecaps Battle Back

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Great Lakes Loons scored the first two runs Thursday night, but the West Michigan Whitecaps added the final four for a 4-2 win before 4,872 fans.

The Loons struck for the first two runs of the ballgame - the first on a double by Juan Apodaca in the fifth and the second in the sixth on a Rick Taloa two bagger.

Then after five scoreless innings on the mound, Josh Wall was removed in favor of Joe Jones. Jones (1-3) surrendered a run in the sixth on a double by Brennan Boesch. Then in the seventh the Whitecaps tied the game up on a Gorkys Hernandez single scoring Jordan Newton. The next batter, Scott Sizemore, doubled to score Hernandez to give West Michigan a 3-2 lead. The Whitecaps added an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Blake Brannon on a double by Newton.

Phil Napolitan (4-2) entered in relief of starter Lauren Gagnier to record the win.

Taloa was 3-for-4 to lead the Loons offensively. Apodaca (2-for-3) also had a multi-hit game.

The loss for the Loons (55-78 overall, 21-42 second half) snapped a two-game winning streak.

The Loons and Whitecaps wrap up their two game series Friday evening beginning at 7pm. Steven Johnson will hurl for the Loons on his 20th birthday. The Loons return to Dow Diamond Saturday for the first of a four-game, three-day series with the Fort Wayne Wizards. Saturday's doubleheader, beginning at 5:35pm, is sold out.
