Shirt-Off-The-Back Night to Benefit Special Olympics

August 30, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - One dollar can stretch a long way.

For a single buck, fans attending Round Rock's Saturday game against the New Orleans Zephyrs can enter into a raffle to win a special road jersey worn by the Express during the game. At the same time, fans purchasing a raffle ticket will be supporting thousands of Special Olympians and Special Olympic volunteers.

All proceeds from this year's "Shirt Off the Back Night" presented by Alcoa-Rockdale will go directly to Special Olympics Texas, which supports Special Olympians and their dreams.

Express players, coaches and manager Jackie Moore will don gray road jerseys for Saturday's game. Raffle tickets will be available through Special Olympics Texas volunteers along the thirdbase concourse. At the end of the contest, names will be drawn at random from the raffle pool and each winner will be invited onto the field to meet the owner of the jersey and receive an autograph.

Round Rock will also honor Special Olympics Central Texas athletes as Baseball Buddies on Saturday, welcoming athletes onto the field during the National Anthem.

The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to more than 2.5 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 165 countries. More than 550,000 of Special Olympians reside in the United States, making the country the largest part of the Special Olympics' global movement.

In Texas, more than 50,000 volunteers help provide opportunities for intellectually challenged people by offering 20 sports, including Swimming, Basketball, Cycling, Soccer, Powerlifting, Tennis and Volleyball.

Special Olympics Texas holds more than 200 competitions annually on an area, regional and state level. Athletes train for a minimum of eight weeks prior to each competition, receiving aid from certified volunteers along the way.
