Loons Rally Falls Short In Lansing

August 26, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

LANSING, MI- The Great Lakes Loons got their offense going for the first time against the Lansing Lugnuts, but their timing was a bit late Sunday afternoon in an 8-7 loss in front of 5,102 fans at Oldsmobile Park.

The Lugnuts jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks in part to a five-run third inning highlighted by Lansing right-fielder Travis Snider's 3-run homer. Snider, the new Midwest League leader in runs batted in (87), hit a three run shot off Loons starter Steven Johnson.

On this day, the Loons would fight back scoring a run in the sixth on Trayvon Robinson's second home run of the season, a liner down the left-field line to make it 8-3. In the eighth, the Loons would strike for three more runs against Lugnuts reliever Zach Dials. Loons second baseman Preston Mattingly tripled to right-field to score two runs and Matt Berezay delivered an RBI-groundout to cut the deficit to 8-6.

In the ninth, the Loons threatened to tie the game when James Peterson's RBI-single brought the Lansing lead to a single-run and put the tying run 90 feet away at third base. It wasn't meant to be as shortstop Juan Rivera's suicide squeeze attempt got pinch-runner Francisco Lizarraga thrown out at the plate and Trayvon Robinson ended the game with a strikeout.

The Loons left 11 runners on base in the ballgame.

Johnson (3-6) picked up his sixth loss of the year going only three innings and allowing seven of Lansing's eight runs. Arismendy Castillo and Blake Brannon pitched a combined six innings allowing a total of run to keep their team in the ballgame.

Ron Lowe (2-1) picked up his second win of the season going three innings and allowing two runs in relief of starter Graham Godfrey who pitched three scoreless innings.

The Loons-Lugnuts series continues on Monday night. Gametime is set for 7:05 PM ET. Brad Golder will call the action from Lansing on the flagship radio home of the Loons, ThunderCountry 100.9 WYLZ.
