David Herndon (12-8) allowed three hits over seven innings and Peter Bourjos hit a two run HR as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Swing of the Quad Cities, 4-1, for their tenth consecutive win at John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport on Saturday night.
The Kernels had nine hits as P.J. Phillips was 2 for 5 with an RBI and Ryan Mount was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three stolen bases.
Jim West allowed an unearned run in relief of Herndon and Warner Madrigal allowed one hits and struck out two over one inning to earn his 18th save of the season.
The win moves the Kernels to 35-26 in the second half and 73-54 overall and closes the gap to 2-1/2 games between the Kernels and first place Quad Cities with nine games remaining in the season. The Kernels and Swing will play two more times.
Game three of this four game series is Sunday afternoon at 1 pm as two 10-game winners take the mound in Sean O'Sullivan for the Kernels and Tyler Herron for the Swing. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
