Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals split a double-header on Saturday night against the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. The Travs edged the Cards 5-4 in the opening game, before Springfield blanked the Travelers 4-0 in game two.

Colby Rasmus led the Cards to a game-two victory, going 3-4 with his league-leading 25th homer of the year, as Springfield (31-29) stayed 1/2 game ahead of the Travs (31-30) for first place in the North Division Second Half Standings.

Cody Haerther's fourth homer of the year put the Cards ahead for good in the third inning. Rasmus opened the inning with a double, then moved to third on a ground ball by Jose Martinez. Haerther's homer came on a 3-2 pitch against Travs' reliever Von Stertzbach (1-2).

Rasmus scored again in the fifth, as he tagged from third on Rico Washington's sac fly to center field, making it 3-0.

In the seventh, Rasmus opened the inning with his 25th homer of the year, a solo shot to right field off of Travs' reliever Bill Edwards, giving Springfield a 4-0 advantage.

Springfield's game-two starter Adam Daniels fired four scoreless innings, but gave way to eventual winner Kyle McClellan in the fifth. Daniels allowed just two hits, while fanning four men on the night. McClellan (2-0), Jason Motte and Mike Sillman combined to work the final three innings of relief.

Game one saw the Travs get to Cards' starter Mitchell Boggs (10-7) for five runs in five innings of work.

Arkansas scored in each of the first four innings to take the lead for good. Corey Myers' sac fly in the first inning put the Travelers up 1-0. Matt Pali homered to right in the second, making it a 2-0 game. An RBI double from Ben Johnson in the third put Arkansas up 3-0.

Springfield got a pair of runs in the fourth to tighten things up. Mark Hamilton's RBI single made it 3-1. Casey Rowlett followed with a sac fly to score Bryan Anderson, making it 3-2.

Arkansas got two more in the fourth to cap their scoring. The inning was highlighted by Sean Rodriguez's 15th homer of the year, making it 5-2.

Springfield got a run back in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk issued by Darren O'Day, cutting the Travs' lead to 5-3.

The Cards had a chance in the ninth, getting a run on another Mark Hamilton RBI single, making it a one-run game at 5-4. But with two on, Casey Rowlett struck out to end the game, giving O'Day his eighth save of the year.

Arkansas starter Nick Adenhart (10-7) earned the win, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Cards will send P.J. Walters (2-3) to the mound on Sunday against Arkansas right-hander John Mosebach (0-0) who will be making his Texas League debut. Game time from North Little Rock on Sunday will be 6:00pm.
