Defenders Split Doubleheader

August 22, 2007 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

After a rain out of game two of a three game set between the Connecticut Defenders and the Harrisburg Senators, the two clubs played in a double header on Wednesday August 22. The Defenders split the evening's games, taking game one 6-0, but dropping game two 2-0.

RHP Nick Pereira was dynamite in game one and received plenty of offense from the Defenders bats. The only time the Senators threatened was in the top of the second inning when Harrisburg had runners at the corners with 2 outs. But Pereira came on strong to retire the next batter on a line out to SS Jake Wald.

The Defenders collected 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after C Dayton Buller was hit with a pitch by starter Mike O'Connor with the bases loaded. An out later Pereira helped his own cause with a 2-run single to extend the Defenders lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning they added another 3 runs on a 3-run blast off the bat of 1B Tyler Von Schell. They lead 6-0 after five full innings and never looked back. Pereira did not allow a runner beyond first base en route to a complete game 6-0 victory.

Michael O'Connor (L, 3-6) took the loss after pitching 5 innings, giving up 6 runs, 5 hits, 4 walks and striking out 5 batters. Nick Pereira (W, 8-9) took the complete game victory after tossing 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4 batters. Tyler Von Schell went 1 for 2 with a home run (12), a walk and 2 runs scored in the win.

In game two the Defenders could not muster up any offense despite a pretty fine effort on the mound from Dave McKae. The Defenders right-handed starter had just one rocky inning in the second. He walked back-to-back Senators in 1B Josh Whitesell and OF Frank Diaz, then two outs later, surrendered a 2-run single to C Javi Herrera.

The two run lead is all the Senators needed as Jeremy Plexico impressed in his spot start, holding the Defenders scoreless in four innings. Alex Morales picked up where he left off in keeping the Connecticut bats at bay for two innings, before Zechery Zinicola finally nailed down the save in the ninth after allowing the first two batters to reach. The Senators took the victory 2-0.

Dave McKae (L, 5-4) absorbed the loss despite pitching a complete game 1-hitter. He went 7 innings, surrendering 2 runs on 1 hit, walked 2 and struck out 3 batters. Alex Morales (W, 2-2) recorded his second win of the season after pitching 2 scoreless innings, without surrendering a hit, walking 1 and striking out 4 batters. Zechery Zinocola (S, 5) notched his fifth save of the season after working around 2 hits in the ninth, without surrendering a run and striking out two batters.
